INSTANT ADMISSION DAY: APRIL 5, 2017

This program is designed to allow students who have completed a bachelor's degree to earn teacher certification in one of the following areas: Biology, Chemistry, Earth Science, Family and Consumer Science, French, Mathematics, Physics, or Spanish.

Post baccalaureate programs may be taken on a full- or part-time basis. When taken on a full-time basis, they can be completed in as little as one calendar year, from May to May. They are designed for individuals with a bachelor’s degree seeking New York State initial certification to teach adolescence education in either Biology, Chemistry, Earth Science, Family and Consumer Science, French, Mathematics, Physics, or Spanish. Post-baccalaureate certificate programs are only for students who have the appropriate bachelor’s or master’s degree in one of the certification areas listed above. Those with a master’s degree in one of the listed disciplines may, after completing this program and three years of teaching, apply for professional certification. Students must complete all the courses in the program.

Admission Requirements

All students applying for admission to degree status are required to:

  • B.A., B.S. or master's degree and/or proven completion of all of the required content area courses in the certificate area of Biology, Chemistry, Earth Science, Family and Consumer Science, French, Human Ecology, Mathematics, Physics or Spanish.
  • B.A., B.S. or master's degree issued within the last 10 years.
  • A minimum 3.0 undergraduate cumulative grade point average; a 2.8 grade point average in the content area of the undergraduate major or a master’s degree in the content area.
  • Successful completion of three years of one foreign language in high school or two semesters of one foreign language at the college level.
  • At least 3 s.h. of college-level computer technology applications course work.
  • Passing grade on the CST examination upon admission. For dates click here.
  • Register for TEACH, if you have not done so already. This may be done at www.highered.nysed.gov/tcert/teach/index.html
  • Fall, spring and summer admission. (one year program begins in the summer only*)

APPLY ONLINE

The online application, $50 application fee and official transcripts must be received by the Office of Graduate Studies by April 14 for May admission. NOTE: If the undergraduate major or master’s degree does not fulfill all content course work necessary for certification and national content standard requirements, those specific content courses that are missing are still required for certification and must be successfully completed prior to beginning one of these certificate programs. The $50 application fee is waived for SUNY Oneonta Undergraduates.
