An Economic Engine for the Region
With an annual general budget of $106 million, SUNY Oneonta is an economic engine for the Oneonta region. SUNY Oneonta employs a work force of more than 1,250 and enrolls approximately 6,000 students, many of whom purchase goods and services from businesses in Otsego County.
SUNY Oneonta collaborates with a variety of community organizations to enhance the quality of life in our region. We offer space on our campus, financial and in-kind support, and the enthusiasm and expertise of our faculty, staff and students, who volunteer in the community and present educational and cultural events ranging from science fairs to theater productions.
Local and regional internship partnerships give area businesses and nonprofits an extra pair of hands, and the opportunity to guide and evaluate talent.

Community and Economic Development
In an effort to strengthen the symbiotic relationship between the university and surrounding community, SUNY Oneonta established a Regional Innovation Council (RIC) in spring 2022. With a membership comprising representatives of the business, government, education and nonprofit sectors, the RIC aims to identify collaborative projects to support community development and help the Greater Oneonta region grow economically and culturally.
Government Relations
SUNY Oneonta is actively involved in public education advocacy at the local and state level. We are committed to using our voice to improve higher education access and opportunity, and to establish partnership programs that strengthen both SUNY Oneonta and the Oneonta community. We frequently host local and state government representatives on campus.

Microcredential Program to Support Workforce
SUNY Oneonta has been awarded $706,455 in grant funding to provide local workforce training and fill a growing need for specially trained support professionals across Otsego County and the region.
Cadets Graduate from Law Enforcement Academy
During a formal graduation ceremony on Friday, March 1, the SUNY Oneonta Law Enforcement Academy recognized five new police cadets who completed the Basic Course for Police Officers Certificate. All five graduates are employed by local police departments.
Oneonta, Cobleskill Create Education Pathway
SUNY Cobleskill and SUNY Oneonta signed a pathway agreement on Feb. 20. 2024, allowing Cobleskill’s Early Childhood Studies (A.A.S.) graduates to seamlessly enter Oneonta’s Childhood Education (B.S.) program.
Students Get Hands-On Experience Filing Taxes
SUNY Oneonta accounting and business students are getting firsthand experience for the future by preparing income tax returns for the community, continuing an annual tradition in an impressive new venue: the recently renovated Alumni Hall.
Offshore Wind Training Grant Awarded
New York State Governor Kathy Hochul recently announced $4 million in grants for offshore wind training and workforce development, supporting programs at SUNY Oneonta and several other SUNY campuses preparing students for careers in the emerging offshore wind industry.

Bassett CARES Partnership to Address Critical Workforce Shortage
Bassett Healthcare Network, SUNY Oneonta and Hartwick College have launched a groundbreaking workforce development partnership aimed at keeping recent graduates in the region and addressing critical workforce shortages across Bassett’s network. Leaders from each organization gathered Sept. 13 for a signing ceremony at A.O. Fox Hospital in Oneonta.
Springbrook Program Lets Staff Earn College Credits
A new partnership between SUNY Oneonta and Springbrook provides a convenient, no-cost opportunity for Direct Support Professionals to take college classes and earn credit toward a certificate or degree program.

From science activities to fine arts events to hiking and biking trails, SUNY Oneonta offers many resources open to members of the Oneonta community.
Planetarium
SUNY Oneonta’s planetarium features a digital projector system capable of bringing you sharp views of the stars, planets, constellations visible in the night sky. Shows are offered each semester to the general public, school groups, and can be booked for private events.
Science Discovery Center
SUNY Oneonta's A.J. Read Science Discovery Center is a free, hands-on museum for people of all ages and abilities. Its mission is to connect visitors to the joy and power of the scientific process through a variety of authentic, interactive exhibits.
Observatory
The Observatory at College Camp is home to the largest optical telescope in the state of New York, and several smaller telescopes.
ExCL Center
From high school students looking to get a head-start on college courses, to community members who want to get training for a new career, SUNY Oneonta's Extended and Community Learning Center is here for you. We offer a variety of in-person and online courses, and many new programs are being developed.
Art Galleries
Located in the Fine Arts Center, SUNY Oneonta’s Martin Mullen and Project Space galleries offer several exhibitions each year by nationally and internationally recognized artists, faculty and students. Major exhibitions include an opening reception and artist’s talk.
Theater Productions
The Mask and Hammer student theater club and Theater Department stage several productions each year, including a musical and at least two student-directed shows. All productions are presented in the 487-seat Goodrich Theater or the “black box” Hamblin Theater.
Summer Youth Camps
SUNY Oneonta hosts several summer programs for various interests and ages. Some of our programs are directed by our own faculty, coaches, and students, while others are managed by outside private groups.
Event Spaces
For your next conference or event, experience the beauty of New York’s Central Leatherstocking Region. Spaces include the Morris Conference Center that features large and small meeting spaces, two full-service dining facilities and lodging rooms.
Voter Registration
One of the most basic ways for citizens to participate in a democracy is voting. Voter registration forms are available on campus in the President’s Office, Accessibility Resources, University Police, and the Student Association Office.

CSRC
The Center for Social Responsibility and Community provides a variety of opportunities for students, faculty and staff to work together on service-learning courses, individual community-service activities and group volunteer efforts such as the annual Into the Streets event.

From theatre productions and art exhibitions to nationally known speakers, SUNY Oneonta is a hub for cultural and educational events. Annual events include the Mills Distinguished Lecture, Cornell-Gladstone-Hanlon Kaufmann Lecture and Red Dragon Reading Series.
