Full Graduate Faculty Appointments

A faculty member is eligible for designation as a Full Graduate Faculty member only when the faculty member:

  • Holds an earned doctorate or other terminal degree; and
  • Is a full-time tenured or tenure-track professor who holds the rank of at least assistant professor; and
  • Has a record of ongoing scholarly productivity, research, and/or creative activity that is appropriate to the discipline, which may include: peer-reviewed publications or presentations, research recognized in the field, service on professional committees outside the institution, grants acquisition, awards, and continued professional development.

Faculty designated as Full Graduate Faculty may:

  • Serve as graduate program director or departmental graduate committee chair
  • Develop, implement, and evaluate curricular design
  • Have input in programmatic designs
  • Serve as an instructor of record for graduate courses
  • Serve on departmental, school, and committees
  • Advise graduate students
  • Advise a graduate thesis or other capstone
  • Serve on a thesis or other capstone committee
  • Supervise a graduate internship
  • Recruit graduate students

Associate Graduate Faculty Appointments

A faculty member is eligible for designation as an Associate Graduate Faculty member only when the faculty member:

  • Holds an earned terminal degree or a master’s degree or is A.B.D. in a doctoral or other terminal degree program; and
  • Has widely recognized special competence in the discipline in which they teach, demonstrated through licensure, certifications, or a minimum of three years professional practice; and
  • Has a record of ongoing scholarly productivity, research, and/or creative activity that is appropriate to the discipline, which may include: peer-reviewed publications or presentations, research recognized in the field, serving on professional committees outside the institution, grants acquisition, awards, and continued professional development.

Faculty designated as Associate Graduate Faculty may:

  • Serve as graduate program director or chair a departmental graduate committee
  • Have input in the development, implementation, and evaluation of curricular design
  • Have input in other programmatic designs
  • Serve as an instructor of record for graduate courses
  • Serve as a committee member on departmental, school, and committees
  • Advise graduate students
  • Advise a graduate thesis or other capstone
  • Serve on a thesis or other capstone committee
  • Supervise a graduate internship
  • Recruit graduate students

Temporary Graduate Faculty Appointments

Temporary Graduate Faculty status may be awarded to a faculty member who does not fully meet the criteria for Full or Associate Graduate Faculty status due to less extensive experience or more limited scholarly productivity, research, or creative activity in order for the faculty member to perform specific functions, typically the instruction of a specified graduate-level course, for three academic years.

Faculty designated as Temporary Graduate Faculty may:

  • Serve as an instructor of record for graduate courses
  • Serve on a thesis or other capstone committee

Affiliated Professionals

An affiliated professional has expertise that facilitates the successful completion of an important learning outcome. An affiliated professional provides skills to graduate students in a graduate course for which a faculty member with Full or Associate Graduate status is the instructor of record.

Affiliated professional may:

  • Oversee day-to-day tasks of a specific field experience or internship
  • Provide oversight and skills training in a laboratory setting
  • Provide instruction in specific applied skills within a graduate course

Procedure

Full Graduate Faculty Appointments will be reviewed for new faculty by the SUNY Oneonta Graduate Committee and will not expire as long as the appointee meets the criteria.

Associate Graduate Faculty Appointments will be reviewed by the SUNY Oneonta Graduate Committee every five (5) years with an initial review for existing faculty staggered from 2018-2019.

2018: last names beginning A-L
2019: last names beginning M-Z

Each review must include:

  • A Graduate Faculty Profile and up-to-date C.V.
  • A letter from the program director or department chair explaining (1) special competence to teach at the graduate level and (2) scholarly productivity, research, and/or creative activity that is appropriate to the discipline

Materials must be submitted by September 30 for renewal. The graduate committee will forward its recommendation to the provost. New appointments can be considered at any time; outside of the fall and spring semesters, a sub-committee of no less than three committee members outside the requesting department will review the materials and make a recommendation.

Temporary Graduate Faculty Appointments will be reviewed by the SUNY Oneonta Graduate Committee. The graduate committee will forward its recommendation to the provost. Outside of the fall and spring semesters, a sub-committee of no less than three committee members outside the requesting department will review the materials and make a recommendation.

Each review must include:

  • A Graduate Faculty Profile and up-to-date C.V.
  • A letter from the program director or department chair explaining (1) the course(s) to be taught or other function(s) to be provided by the faculty, and (2) the need to engage a faculty member who does not meet the criteria for a Full or Associate Graduate Faculty Appointment
