The SUNY Oneonta President's Council on Diversity has selected Dr. Zanna McKay of the School of Education and Human Ecology and Dr. Bernadette Tiapo from Multicultural Student Affairs to receive the Tapestry of Diversity Award. The award, established in 2010, recognizes individuals or groups for exceptional contributions in fostering diversity and inclusion at the college through leadership, service or support.
A ceremony honoring McKay and Tiapo will take place on Wednesday, March 19, in the Craven Lounge at the Morris Conference Center on the college’s campus. The event, which is free and open to the public, will begin at 2 p.m. and include the presentation of the awards, remarks, entertainment and refreshments.
McKay has published articles on multiculturalism and diverse approaches to education, and teaches “Diversity in Education,” which challenges students to address questions of race, privilege, prejudice, and inclusion.
Tiapo, as director of the Office of Multicultural Student Affairs, has played a critical role in the development of activities such as the Diversity Peer Education Program and the Annual Multicultural Student Leadership Conference. She also supports the college’s annual Kente Recognition Ceremony.
