Professional Accounting Major

About the Major

A professional accounting major leading to professional licensure has been offered at SUNY Oneonta since 1992. SUNY Oneonta's 150-hour accounting program, which is registered with the New York State Education Department to meet the curriculum requirements for the Uniform Certified Public Accounting Examination, provides students with the analytical tools and decision-making ability needed to pursue a variety of careers in the accounting profession.

All advanced courses and most introductory courses are taught by full-time faculty whose focus is on accounting and law. Class sizes are small. Advanced courses average 15-20 students. Introductory courses average 35-45 students. Qualified accounting majors have the opportunity to obtain practical work experience by completing an internship between the junior and senior years. A select group of upper-level students serve as tutors and faculty assistants. Computer applications in accounting are taught in several courses.

Professional accounting majors have the option of advancing their knowledge of a functional field of business beyond the business core curriculum by pursuing a concentration in finance or marketing.
