Approval of Minutes

Upon motion of Mr. Bernier, seconded by Mr. Brenner, Council unanimously approved the minutes of its Feb. 8, 2017 meeting.

Chair’s Report

Mr. Brown discussed the news of Dr. Kleniewski’s retirement and how critical the council’s participation is in the selection of the new president. Mr. Brown will be sending the SUNY guidelines for presidential selection to all council members via email. Mr. Brown read Nicole Pereira’s resolution and thanked her for her service to College Council.

President’s Report

Dr. Kleniewski asked Kevin to speak about the enrollment report that is included within the packet. Mr. Jensen stated that with students graduating early and to maintain our size and budget, we are bringing in more freshman and transfer students. Our numbers are indicating that we are starting to have more student deposits and we are on track for receiving the number of students as targeted. In a response from a question from Mr. Bernier, Mr. Jensen explained the extra attention the enrollment management staff is giving to the Excelsior Scholarship. The enrollment management committee will be discussing how to talk to current and

new students whether they meet the criteria or not and their options. This scholarship is unique in that it is applies to a 4 year degree and it’s expected that it will turn more eyes toward going to college.

Dr. Kleniewski announced that we had 4 Student Chancellors Award winners and Mr. Chambers and herself took some of them to Albany on April 5 to the reception ceremony.

Dr. Kleniewski updated Council on the current construction on campus. The OAS building is almost complete and their offices will be moving by the end of April, the bookstore will move through the summer and be ready for classes to start in August. The Welcome Center should be completed within six to seven months.

Dr. Kleniewski shared that the May 2017 commencement will include three ceremonies, and asked that Council members let Ms. Brannan know which ceremony(ies) they would like to attend.

In response to a question from Mr. Brown, Dr. Kleniewski stated that the travel ban from majority Muslim countries has not affected our campus. We do have a few students that are concerned about the deportation rule, but many more have concerns about their parents, who are not citizens. The counseling center has been offering counseling sessions for these students.

Provost’s Report

Dr. Mackin reported that we have a new academic program, Sport Management, and have reviewed our programs being offered. After review, there were several BA or BS degrees that were eliminated because they were duplicate or have not had any participation in several years. There are 15 programs being re-registered, 10 program modifications and nine new programs being presented. In response to a question from Mr. Bernier, Dr. Mackin stated that a program that was dropped that would surprise us would be school nurse.

Applied Learning Report

Dr. Morgan-Zayachek delivered a presentation describing applied learning. Common forms of applied learning are internships, job shadowing, peer tutoring, community service, conference presentation, and student teaching. Dr. Morgan-Zayachek partnered with SUNY Potsdam and received a $130,000 grant to incentivize faculty and use Connect software. In response to a question from Mr. Brown, Dr. Morgan-Zayachek stated that we do not have definitive data stating what percentage of our students engage in applied learning. However, faculty indicate that it is around 60%.

Campus Climate Report

Dr. Bonderoff and Ms. Tiemann delivered a presentation describing the results of the Environment for Living, Learning and Working survey: 1,781 people responded, 1,228 were women, 324 identified as members of the LGBTQi community, and 303 were People of Color. The overall response rate was 25%. The college has put in place many programs to address brought forward by the survey. Among them are BART bolster, Kathy O’Bear presentation, Sexual Misconduct Advisory Group, ACE Program, SDIP and open forums.

ACT Report

Dr. Georgeson shared that the ACT Annual meeting will be the week of Sept. 16, 2017 and it will be held in Albany. There is a new scholarship called the Zimpher Scholarship for Education and the recipient will receive $1,500, Dr. Georgeson is willing to review any applications that are being submitted prior to submission.

Adjournment

Upon a motion by Mr. Bernier, Mr. Brown adjourned the meeting at 4:10 p.m.

Respectfully submitted, Christina Miller Secretary
