Call to Order

Mr. Brown called the meeting to order at 3:11 p.m. He welcomed Mr. Daren Rylewicz, alumni observer.

Approval of Minutes

Upon motion of Dr. Brenner, seconded by Mr. Bernier, the minutes of the meeting of Feb. 11, 2015 were approved as amended to correct a misspelling of Mr. Brown’s name.

Chair’s Report

Mr. Brown deferred his report.

125th Anniversary Campaign for SUNY Oneonta Report

Mr. Adamo presented a summary of the Possibilities Full of Promise campaign, sharing that the goal of raising $12.5 million in new gifts and grants has been surpassed. He announced that the college foundation’s endowment has reached $51.4 million, the largest among SUNY peer institutions.

Mr. Adamo discussed the uses of foundation funds to initiate news scholarships, to send students abroad and to academic conferences, and to defray faculty development costs.

President’s Report

Dr. Kleniewski referred to materials documenting advocacy for SUNY in connection with the New York State Legislature’s recent consideration of the state budget. She added that the college expects flat funding from the state in the near term.

She asked Ms. Brannan to update Council members regarding changes to events the day of commencement. Dr. Kleniewski added that Caryl Stern will be the commencement speaker.

Provost’s Report

Dr. Thompson shared that the college is planning an assessment of its readiness to offer additional online courses. Mr. Sniezek offered that in regard to online learning, some students have concerns about the social environment, intellectual property, and the ability of instructors to modify content. Dr. Kleniewski clarified that SUNY Oneonta is not planning to become a predominantly online college.

In response to a question from Mr. Brown, Dr. Thompson clarified that instructional design is paramount in the development of online courses. She added that non-traditional students are not admitted through the same gateway as first-time freshmen.

Chair’s Report

Mr. Brown discussed the state budget, noting that several issues and efforts competed with SUNY for funding and attention from the Legislature.

SUNY 2020 Challenge Grant Proposal

Dr. Kleniewski referred to a proposal seeking $23 million from the state through economic development programs to rehabilitate Alumni Hall. Mr. Brown stressed that the proposal will need robust endorsements from elected officials. Dr. Kleniewski confirmed that the college is seeking the same, along with endorsements from others.

On motion by Mr. Sniezek, seconded by Dr. Brenner, Council unanimously endorsed SUNY Oneonta’s NYSUNY 2020 Alumni Hall Renovation application.

Student Code of Conduct Revisions–Hearing Procedures

Dr. Perry shared the rationale behind proposed changes, referring to a document that described them. Mr. Sniezek noted that Ms. Malik may not have reviewed the proposed changes.

In response to a question from Mr. Brown, Dr. Perry described the composition of the college’s Standing Disciplinary Board, and discussed the basis of student appeals to Board determinations.

On motion by Bernier, seconded by Ms. Parisian, Council approved the revisions by a vote of 5 votes in favor, none opposed, and one abstention. Mr. Bernier, Dr. Brenner, Mr. Brown, Dr. Georgeson and Ms. Parisian voted aye. Mr. Sniezek abstained.

Strategic Plan 2015 Report

Mr. Foreman asked the Council to endorse the draft strategic plan. Members discussed their support of initiatives to advance the development of teaching.

Dr. Ellis commended the Strategic Planning Council for its inclusivity in developing the college’s draft plan.

Mr. Foreman affirmed that the plan aligns with SUNY’s strategic plan.

By unanimous consent, Council endorsed the draft strategic plan 2015.

ACT Report

Dr. Georgeson reported that no ACT activity had occurred since Council’s Feb. 11, 2005 meeting.

Resolution Recognizing Dr. Perry

On motion by Mr. Bernier, seconded by Dr. Georgeson, Council unanimously approved a resolution recognizing Dr. Perry for his service to the college.

Good of the Order

Mr. Sniezek reported on his attendance at Rethink Shared Governance meeting held in Syracuse in March. 3

Mr. Brown reported that ACT would like to have training for new members of SUNY college councils.

Dr. Kleniewski shared information pertaining to SUNY’s process to evaluate campus presidents, which is underway now.

Adjournment

On motion of Mr. Bernier, Mr. Brown adjourned the meeting at 4:39 p.m.
