SUNY Oneonta is among the top 10 New York colleges and universities offering online degree programs, according to a new ranking by AffordableCollegesOnline.org (AC Online). SUNY Oneonta is No. 7 on the list of the 37 “Most Affordable Online Colleges in New York” compiled by AC Online, a leading resource for college affordability and financial aid information. According to AC Online founder Dan Schuessler, the rankings recognize colleges that offer students “quality, flexibility and affordability.” SUNY Oneonta offers five graduate programs with an online component. The college’s master’s degree programs in Literacy Education (B-6) and (5-12) are hybrid programs, delivered partially online and partially in the classroom. The educational technology specialist (K-12 certification) master’s degree program and school counselor Certificate of Advanced Study program are offered completely online. In addition, the college’s highly acclaimed nutrition and dietetics graduate program is offered completely online, except for a required internship that can be performed near the student’s home. Graduate student interns who successfully complete this full-time, three-semester, online program earn a master’s in nutrition and dietetics and are eligible to take the national examination to become a registered dietitian. "While our residential experience certainly contributes significantly to SUNY Oneonta's reputation as a top-flight college, this ranking acknowledges just how well our online offerings stack up against other schools' programs," said Richard Lee, interim dean of Education and Human Ecology. “It is indeed an honor to have the superb faculty who serve our students recognized for their excellence. We are fortunate to have a critical mass of excellent educators working in this exciting, virtual environment.” Earlier this year, SUNY Oneonta founded its School of Education and Human Ecology to give greater focus to disciplines and careers in those areas. The college’s Professional Education Unit offers nine graduate programs and undergraduate majors or minors in elementary education and reading, secondary education, educational psychology, counseling and special education. In addition to the online combined master’s degree and dietetic internship program, the college’s Department of Human Ecology offers undergraduate programs in child and family studies, dietetics, general human ecology, fashion and textiles, and food service and restaurant administration. SUNY Oneonta’s professional education programs are accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE), the highest standard of excellence in the United States. The undergraduate and graduate nutrition and dietetics programs are accredited by the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND), the accrediting agency for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. The AC Online ranking is the latest affirmation of SUNY Oneonta’s growing reputation for excellence and affordability. Over the past several years, SUNY Oneonta has consistently achieved recognition for quality and value, including ranking 16th on the 2014 U.S. News and World Report list of the “Top Public Regional Universities—North” and being included in the Kiplinger's magazine list of the "100 Best Values in Public Colleges" for seven years running.
