United University Professions (UUP) Oneonta and SUNY Oneonta are pleased to announce an agreement that will offer adjunct lecturers the chance to seek advancement. The college and union have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) creating opportunities for part-time, adjunct faculty members to receive promotions, along with increases in pay, greater job security and access to faculty development funds.
The MOU puts in place a process to recognize long-serving part-time, adjunct faculty members, and makes SUNY Oneonta a leader among comprehensive colleges in our sector for offering advancement opportunities. It also creates an evaluation program for members of the faculty who teach part time.
Eligible adjunct faculty members will be able to apply for promotions beginning Sept. 16. UUP has scheduled two workshops to discuss the application process with members:
- Sept. 11, 4-5 p.m., at Le Café in the Morris Conference Center; and
- Sept. 17, 10-11 a.m., at the Butternut Room in the Hunt Union.
The MOU affirms a commitment by the administration and UUP Oneonta to work together constructively for the betterment of employees, the college and the students that all employees serve. It recognizes that those who teach part time are essential contributors to our community and to the quality of instruction on campus. The agreement also demonstrates the president’s vision to create an inclusive community that values all teaching faculty.
This MOU is the culmination of several years of work between the administration and UUP. President Morris, former Provost Jim Mackin and Senior Executive Employee Services Officer Lisa Wenck led management’s efforts. For UUP Oneonta, past Vice President for Academics Rob Compton, Labor Relations Specialist Darryl Wood and Chief Negotiator Mark Ferrara, who served previously as former contingent concerns officer, were instrumental in reaching this agreement.
The college has planned a special event to celebrate this accomplishment. Members of the college community are invited to a reception on Aug. 29 in the Waterfront Room at Hunt Union from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.
