DCJS POLICE FIELD TRAINING OFFICER COURSE

April 9-12, 2024, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. COST: $75.00

This course is designed to train police officers in the methods and reporting procedures utilized in the Supervised Field Training, Orientation and Review component of the Basic Course for Police Officers as well as for their agency’s FTO program. The goal is to transition the recruit officer from the academy setting to a patrol assignment. Upon completion, participants will be prepared to train and evaluate new police officers, as well as prepare the appropriate written reports and officer evaluations.

CRISIS RESPONSE & INTERVENTION TRAINING (CRIT)

April 29-May 3, 2024, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. COST: $100.00

The Crisis Response and Intervention Training (CRIT) is a 40-hour training program designed to prepare police officers in their response to people experiencing crises related to behavioral health conditions (including mental health conditions and substance use disorders) and intellectual and developmental disabilities. CRIT’s overall philosophy is officer safety, public safety and diversion from the criminal justice system when possible. The goals of the curriculum include:

  • expanding officers’ knowledge of mental health conditions, substance use disorders, and intellectual and developmental disabilities;
  • creating connections with people with lived experience;
  • enhancing officers’ awareness of community services;
  • emphasizing the de-escalation of crisis situations; and
  • supporting officer safety and wellness.

PRINCIPLED POLICING IN-SERVICE 2024

The Otsego County Law Enforcement Academy and the Oneonta City Police Department will be collaboratively providing Principled Policing/Procedural Justice in-service training for the calendar year 2024. This will be accomplished in two (2), four-hour training sessions.

May 7th 2024 - 8AM - 12PM

May 9th 2024 - 12PM - 4PM

May 21st 2024 - 8AM - 12PM

Oneonta City Police Department Members should respond to Sergeant Kraft to schedule a date to attend Session I & II. NYS University Police should coordinate with Lt. Sass for training approval and scheduling for Sessions I & II. Agencies not refenced should reach out to Assistant Director Galante to schedule a seat to attend either session at Joseph.Galante@oneonta.edu.

These is no cost associated with this course. Topics to be presented over the course of both training sessions include:

Principled Policing: Focuses on the way police interact with the public and how these interactions influence crime rates and the public’s view of police and willingness to obey the law. Evidence shows that practicing procedural justice can have a significant impact on compliance, cooperation, public safety and officer safety.

Officer Wellness: This training session will focus on understanding SAMHSAs 8 Dimensions of Wellness and developing wellness plans for building and sustaining personal and profession wellness and resilience. Using this proactive approach to everyday living, participants will develop tools and strategies that facilitate an optimal work-life balance.

Procedural Justice and Police Legitimacy: This training session will focus on understanding police legitimacy and procedural justice, the relationship between the community and the police and the role history has played in hindering legitimacy in some communities.

A Tactical Mindset: Through visual and scenario-based training modules, the second training puts into practice the basic principles of Procedural Justice to increase officer safety improve the ability of police officers to do their jobs and recognize situations where procedural justice principles may apply.

*Training will be held in the new Emergency Services Building and other facilities (TBD) on campus.
*On-site housing available for $50 while space is available.
*Individuals with felony convictions, or open warrants are ineligible.
