Why SUNY Oneonta?
I was at a community college before I came here. I applied and wasn’t sure if I was going to get in. When I got the letter, I was super excited. At my old school you could only major in one thing, but I love sociology, so I was very excited to be able to major in both music performance and sociology here.
Poetry Slam Association, Student Coordinator at the Gender and Sexuality Resource Center (GSRC), Songwriter’s Club, former Resident Assistant
My number one experience has been meeting people. Whether it was at a poetry slam or in the GSRC or doing a program at the SUNY Pride conference, just meeting people and knowing what their interests are has been amazing. Then going abroad with those people and forming an even closer relationship – I went to China on a field course led by faulty from the sociology and art departments, and that was great.
Plans, Goals, Dreams
I would like to be a singer/songwriter and be my own CEO for that label. A side goal would be to become a well-known sociologist and advocate and travel the world researching. I’m interested in social justice, mental health and the connection between mental health and music.
About My Major
I like that it lets me venture into different things. With music, I get the opportunity to sing and perform and do music theory, but I also get to learn about all these amazing musicians who were before my time and I’ve gotten to do some cool things like going to The NAMM (National Association of Music Merchants) Show in California.
Ethnic Relations. It’s thought-provoking, and we don’t just talk about black and white kind of stuff. We venture into different areas and places all around the world. Also Digital Photography. Being able to have some of my work showcased in Hunt Union was cool.
