Why SUNY Oneonta?
I live about an hour away so it was really important for me to be close to home. I visited Oneonta and I just felt this sense of community here. I visited other campuses a few years later and I just never got the same feeling that I got here. And I really liked the communications program. I liked the classes and no other school really compared to it. The feeling I got here was just something special.

Definitely the friends that I’ve met here. I was really homesick coming into it and really nervous. But the two best friends I’ve made – my roommate and my quad mate – have changed my whole experience. I’ve also done two internships so far, and they’ve really changed my path. I was an intern in the New Student Services office and then in Academic Advisement. They’ve been great mentors and people I will talk to forever. I want to go into higher education because of these experiences.
I’m an example of how much you can grow here. I was such a nervous freshman, but this college has honestly changed me. I’m such a different person than I was freshman year. And it’s made my career path because now that’s what I want to do with my life. I just love how much of a difference it has had on me, and I can’t wait to help other students find that.
Plans, Goals, Dreams
I’ll never forget the moment I visited. I was sitting in a presentation and the admissions counselor got up and started speaking, and I’ll never forget that moment because something clicked in me. I was like, “Oh my gosh, I can work at a college and use my public speaking skills.” So my dream job would be to work at a college, I think as an academic advisor. Definitely just helping college students have a great four years and helping them adjust to college. Because I know how much you can grow during the experience, and I’m just really excited to help students in that way.
About My Major
It’s such a broad major. I took public speaking in high school and fell in love with it. It was the first class I really liked. And so I picked Communication Studies because I saw that I got to take public speaking and different interpersonal classes. And I really have loved it. I took an interviewing class and got to be a teaching assistant for a public speaking course. There are just really great professors who have really mentored me. I like the broadness of it because I’ve been able to get a lot of skills out of it that I’ll be able to use for the rest of my life, no matter what field I go into.
Interviewing. I’ve never gotten more out of a class. My professor was so great, and I learned life skills and gained confidence. It was honestly the best class I could have taken.
