Why SUNY Oneonta?
Once I came here and actually saw what the campus was like and the community and everything, I think that was what really made me want to come here for the next four years. Just the feeling of everybody on campus, even not being a part of the community yet, you got such a strong sense of that community that it was like, “I want to be part of that.” Everyone knows each other and everyone’s nice. There’s just a big family, and you feel that right away.
Alpha Phi Omega National Service Fraternity, Phonathon supervisor, Teaching Assistant
Some of the best experiences I’ve had have all involved my friends and the people I’ve met here. Even from freshman year living in Hulbert Hall. My freshman roommate and I actually still lived together our senior year, which is crazy because we didn’t know each other before college. We met through the Facebook group for admitted students and we have lived together every year since! We’re always telling stories and remembering stuff from freshman year. My friends and the people I’ve met are such a major part of my experience year. Now I bring them home to my hometown, and they’ve met my friends at home, and it’s really great to have that. I would also say the professors. I have such close relationships with so many of the professors. I think it’s just because they are there to teach but also there supporting you. They want you to succeed. It’s almost like a friendship, like an equal give and take. They’re so willing to learn from you, as well, and grow together.
About My Major
The professors in the English Department are so amazing. I have loved being a TA. I’ve actually had five majors since I was here. All in the same vicinity, kind of. I started out as a Biology major my freshman year, but I nixed that really quick. Then after that I’ve been in the general field of education and English. I was an education major up until last year, but I was focusing on the older students and decided I wanted to work with younger students, but I didn’t want to backtrack. So I decided to just get my master’s in it instead.
My freshman year I took Writing for TV, Radio and Film. At one point I thought maybe I wanted to go that route, although I didn’t end up doing that. It was so cool to be able to learn how to write headlines and short TV scenes and actually being on camera. It was something I’d never experienced before, so that was really cool.
Plans, Goals, Dreams
To be some sort of behavioral special education teacher. I think that would be so awesome. Being in a classroom every day and helping students who maybe don’t get that opportunity to have someone who’s willing to put in that extra effort and really take the time to understand. That would be something I’d love to do for students. I’m applying to master’s programs for special education and childhood education.
