Why SUNY Oneonta?
I was just looking for SUNY schools that wouldn't be too far from home but also not too close so that I could stay on campus and have that experience. Oneonta was one of my top schools, so I was really excited when I got my acceptance letter.
Poetry Slam Association, Taekwondo, Kickboxing, Hall Government, Night Hosting
Definitely going to Philadelphia for the CUPSI competition with the Poetry Slam Team. We got to meet all these teams from different schools and stuff and I didn't even know that Oneonta would have opportunities like that. I also appreciate a lot of the events they have on campus, like when there was a petting zoo on the quad and I got to ride a horse and play with the animals. Some of my best times with my friends have been going to the late-night paint nights or trivia nights on campus. When we won trivia finally, that was so exciting. Another great experience was running the Saturday Night Fever event as the president of my residence hall last year.
What Surprised You About Oneonta?
It’s a lot more diverse than I expected it to be, to be honest. Maybe it's because of the organizations and clubs that I like to join and stuff, but I know at my old school I was the only Arab Muslim American. So it's cool to come here and meet other people with similar backgrounds and to kind of exchange stories and stuff like that.
About My Major
So far all of my education professors have been great. I loved Education 106. I like that we get to get experience in the classroom for classes. And I'm excited to start tutoring. So I guess I really like that about the education department, as well.
Plans, Goals, Dreams
I was set on being a high school English teacher. But I also think it would be nice to be in administration and be the person that makes a lot of decisions. Because there are a lot of things that I have ideas about that I think we could change for the better. So I guess that would be a dream job, as well.
What I’ll Remember in 20 Years
I think what will stick out the most is just the community. Like, just being around so many people and having so many good friends. I really like that I can just walk on campus and I'll see so many people that I know from all these different organizations and activities that I do. And it just feels almost like I have a second family, you know? So I think I'll remember that when I talk about going to school here, just the people that I met and how great they were.
