SUNY Oneonta Computer Science majors study the theoretical and practical applications of computer science. Topics include programming, operating systems, web programming, robotics, computer graphics, numerical computing and artificial intelligence, among others. You can choose from two concentrations:

  • Applied Computing
  • Standard Technical

Related majors in Mathematics, Statistics and Digital & Studio Art are also available, along with minors in Mathematics, Computer Science and Computer Information Technology, and a 3-2 engineering program.

Seminars and independent study projects will allow you to explore more advanced topics and to work with faculty members in special areas of interest. For example, two students worked on a project to study whether NAO humanoid robots could be used in speech language therapy with children with autism. Recent student presentation topics at SUNY Oneonta’s annual Student Research and Creative Activity Day have included parallel computing cluster systems, 3D printing, use of K-Level clustering algorithms in fingerprint verifications, cryptographic libraries, and building a custom Raspberry PI quadrotor. Student teams regularly compete against other colleges and universities in a programming competition.

The Department of Mathematics, Computer Science & Statistics student club, Sanford Society, provides academic and social activities. The Computer Programmers United club offers a forum for students and faculty to share ideas, concepts, technology, information and insights related to the field of computer science.
