Career Planning and Networking: Graduate Program Admission Requirements

Every graduate program is different, so make no assumptions that the application process will be the same for each school. It is your responsibility to read instructions carefully and submit all required information for each program. Here's a list of general requirements you can expect on your graduate school applications:

  • A non-refundable application fee
  • Minimum grade point average
  • Official college transcripts
  • A particular undergraduate major
  • Letters of recommendation: Faculty you ask for a recommendation should be informed of your plans for graduate study. They will then tailor an appropriate letter. Be sure to inform them of any deadline dates. Most graduate schools have their own forms and faculty upload finalized letters of recommendation directly into your application via a personalized email link.
  • Entrance examinations: Deadlines for test registration are well in advance of actual test dates. The most common tests are: Graduate Record Examination (GRE), Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT), Miller Analogies Test (MAT), Law School Admission Test (LSAT), Medical College Admission Test (MCAT), Dental Admission Test (DAT). Note: The SUNY Oneonta Continuing Education Office in partnership with Cambridge Educational Services offers SUNY Oneonta students and alumni an online GRE prep course at a reduced cost! • Samples of previous work
  • A personal statement of goals or purposes: Don't take this lightly! It is used to examine your writing ability and as an indication of your desire to become a professional in the field.
  • An interview with an Admissions Counselor or the chairperson of the graduate program in which you are interested.

The best candidate for admission will be the person who can show general strength in a combination of test results, transcripts, recommendations, and personal statement. Many times a call or letter can determine the value placed on various admissions requirements. Be aware that the specific department you are applying to has the most significant voice in determining the outcome of your application for admission.
