Law Enforcement Academy Phase 1

August 12 - December 17, 2024

Provides Phase I training for New York State certification in Law Enforcement (Phase II is completed post-employment). Program content is based on the standards of the New York State Law Enforcement Academy, as determined by the Department of Criminal Justice Services. Enrollment is restricted to persons accepted to the Law Enforcement Academy. Offered annually.

DCJS Basic Investigative Photography Course

This course teaches the skills necessary to effectively photograph a crime scene and the evidence contained therein by means of classroom instruction and practical workshops. This course provides instruction in both film-based and digital photography however, students are strongly encouraged to bring and utilize digital equipment. This course satisfies the prerequisite for the DCJS police crime scene and evidence specialist course.

Prerequisites

  • Full time, active duty NYS certified police officer or peace officer;
  • Civilian employees of law enforcement agencies may attend with written authorization from their department.

  • Electronic flash – detachable if available
  • Remote sync cord
  • Shutter release cable or remote control
  • Lens with macro/close-up capability
  • Flashlight

  • Batteries or power source for camera and flash (charger, battery packs)
  • Variety of scales
  • Evidence markers
  • 35mm film (minimum of twenty rolls of 200 – 400ASA) – not necessary if shooting digital
  • Memory Card (minimum 16GB) – two preferred – not necessary if shooting film

DCJS Aerosol Subject Restraint Instructor Course

This course prepares the NYS DCJS certified general topics instructor in the history of chemical sprays, selection, safety, effectiveness, hand held personal delivery systems, methods of carry, operational guidelines, in-custody deaths, case studies and decontamination. The course includes both classroom instruction and practical exercises. Student exposure to OC at the instructor level is mandated.

  • Must be certified as NYS DCJS general topics instructor.

Radar Lidar Operator Course

This course will train the participant in independent speed estimation as well as the use of RADAR/LIDAR speed detection instruments. The curriculum includes RADAR/LIDAR theory, vehicle and traffic law, court preparation and presentation. Each participant will develop skills in calibrating the RADAR/LIDAR equipment and practice speed estimates. Each participant will be given a written final exam and a practical exam based on performance of skills learned.

  • Active Police Officer or Peace Officer with the Peace Officer Traffic Enforcement Course.

Breath Analysis Operator Course

This Breath Analysis Operator Course certifies law enforcement personnel in the operation of the Datamaster DMT Infrared Breath Test instrument only. The portable breath test (PBT) and preliminary screening devices will be instructed on as well. The program presents information on the effects of alcohol on the human body, operational procedures, Vehicle and Traffic Law pertaining to DWI enforcement, and pertinent case law. Students must pass both a written test and an instrument proficiency examination in order to be certified.

Prerequisite

  • Active Police Officer or Peace Officer with the Peace Officer Traffic Enforcement Course.

*Training will be held in the new Emergency Services Building and other facilities (TBD) on campus.
*On-site housing available for $50 while space is available.
*Individuals with felony convictions, or open warrants are ineligible.
