To apply for study in one of the Art Department's programs, please follow the Admissions process and instructions. The Admissions office at SUNY Oneonta is staffed with very capable counselors who can guide you through the application process. A portfolio is not required for admission to our programs.
Financial Aid and Scholarships
Students majoring in Digital & Studio Art are eligible for a number of scholarships such as:
- The Jean Parish Scholarship is distributed by the Art Department through a competitive process every fall semester. Art majors, already enrolled in the program are eligible to apply during, or after their first semester. Several non-renewable, awards are distributed for the academic year.
- The Minnie Ann Martin & James Mullen Scholarship is distributed by the Financial Aid office.
- The Lloyd Terrence Kennedy Scholarship for Arts is available through the Financial Aid office.
- The Carrie Krumholtz-Liebman Scholarship for art majors who study abroad for a semester. It is available through the International Studies office.
- Other, non-art specific scholarships are also available through Admissions and Financial Aid.
The above are endowed funds specific to Art Majors. In addition to these, a variety of forms of assistance are available to families whose resources are inadequate to meet the full cost of education. Financial aid comes in three forms: loans, grants, and work-study programs. More information is available through SUNY Oneonta's Financial Aid office.

Q: Do I need to submit a portfolio for admissions?
A: A portfolio is not required for entry into our programs. Contact the admissions office to find out if a portfolio of art work can strengthen your application.
Q: Do you have any internship opportunities for students?
A: We sponsor numerous internships every semester. We provide college credit for students who secure internship positions on and off campus. Many students choose to complete their internships during the summer months. More information about internships
Q: I am interested in transferring to the Art Department at SUNY Oneonta. How would my credits transfer?
A: We have been working hard to ensure that students get credit for the work they've done in other institutions. Once your credits transfer, the registrar will automatically assign course equivalences. You can see these course equivalencies here. A transfer student would need to take at least half of the major requirements at SUNY Oneonta before graduation. If your transferred classes don't get assigned to your degree requirements, we can re-evaluate your transfer courses individually. You should review all your transfer courses as soon as you enter our program in a meeting with your assigned faculty advisor.
If you plan to visit our department, the best time is during one of the scheduled Open House events. Find details on visit opportunities here. During these events, in addition to meeting with admissions and financial aid counselors, you will be able to meet with art professors and students, to tour the art facilities, and, of course, to have your questions answered.
If you plan to visit at a different time, please let the Art Office know ahead of time. We will try our best to schedule a meeting with a faculty member. It would be helpful to let us know ahead of time the area of study you are interested in pursuing (i.e. Graphic Design, Animation, Sculpture, Painting, etc.) so we can schedule a meeting with a pertinent professor.
