Why Oneonta

It all comes back to connections.

Choosing a college is a big decision—one that shapes not just your next four years, but the rest of your life. We believe the most meaningful college experiences are built on real connections: with professors who know your name, classmates and club members who become lifelong friends, and opportunities that bring learning to life.

Whether you're drawn by our strong academics, our sense of community or the beauty of our campus, you'll find that Oneonta is more than just a place to study—it's a place to belong and make connections for life.

Straight from Our Students

When I toured here, I fell in love with the campus and overall vibe of Oneonta, and knew I had to come here.

You won’t get lost in the crowd.

Our campus is designed for collaboration, support and mentorship. With small class sizes and a student-centered approach, you’ll form real relationships with faculty who care about your goals and peers who cheer you on. You can look forward to:

  • 1-on-1 advising and mentoring
  • Supportive, inclusive community
  • Active student clubs, organizations and leadership opportunities
  • A packed social calendar of events and activities
  • Vibrant, walkable downtown with shops, restaurants and friendly business owners (Many are Oneonta alumni!)
  • A beautiful natural environment to explore

We don’t just teach—you DO.

At SUNY Oneonta, experiential or “applied” learning isn’t just a buzzword; it’s built into all of our majors and programs, and every student has access to hands-on learning experiences that prepare you for life after college. Whether it's a research project, internship or faculty-led field course, we guarantee that you will have at least one opportunity to learn by doing before you graduate.

This is a price tag you can afford.

Choose SUNY Oneonta for an excellent college experience, without a mountain of debt. Our in-state tuition rate is one of the lowest in the nation, and 91 percent of our first-year students receive financial aid. Additional financial support includes:

  • Guaranteed room rates — no surprises from year to year. The price of living on campus will be fixed for each entering class and will not be increased for as long as you live in our residence halls
  • Academic merit- and financial need-based scholarships, renewable for up to four years
  • Student grants for internships, research, study abroad programs and short-term trips
  • A Student Emergency Fund, providing one-time grants to students facing unexpected financial challenges

Make memories you’ll never forget.

Students tell us that Oneonta feels like a family, and part of that comes from the fun we have together. From our Red Dragon spirit to time-honored events that bring the whole campus together, tradition is part of what makes this place feel like home. From Pass Through the Pillars, Opening Picnic and Red Day to Halloween in the Halls and the OH-Fest spring concert, you’ll have many opportunities to carry on the traditions that make Oneonta, Oneonta.

Passing Through the Pillars was a standout moment for me. Overlooking all of campus, getting to see everyone cheering for you… It’s a cool introduction to campus.
