On your Initial Visit
What happens in the first appointment? Before you come in you can find out more about what your first appointment might be like here.
After you set up your appointment, we ask that you fill out "paperwork" electronically in advance. You will receive an email from the Secretary with information about the Counseling Center and a link to the secure site. If your appointment is urgent you can fill out the forms on our computer in the Counseling Center lobby when you arrive for your appointment. If you wish to complete the initial intake forms in the Counseling Center immediately prior to your appointment, please arrive 15 minutes early for your appointment.
Come to room 101 of Counseling, Health & Wellness Building. The secretary will check you in and direct you to the waiting room.
Your counselor will greet you and escort you to his or her office.
What you talk about the first time will depend on you and where you want to start. Your counselor may ask a few questions to understand your concerns and to get to know you a little better. You can ask questions too.
Counselors understand that it may be uncomfortable talking about yourself at first. Your counselor can help you start the conversation.
Your contact with the counseling center will be confidential. This means that no information is shared with parents, faculty, or friends without your permission. However, there are several legally mandated exceptions to therapist-client confidentiality, including situations in which the client may be a danger to themselves or others and situations in which neglect or abuse of a child or vulnerable adult is suspected.
