Young Video Game Designer Institutes Re-Design in Response to COVID-19 Stay-at-Home Order

Our Young Video Game Designer Institutes and Video Game Designer Institutes will be offered in an online format for this summer. While in a different format than last summer's video game institutes, we still plan to host fun, engaging, and interactive learning activities that will involve face-to-face, online activities where kids will be able to share, play-test, and present their produced video games. Registration for the institutes are available on pay what you can registration. This means that any and all kids can register for our institutes regardless of income or ability to pay. We look forward to working with all the brilliant young video game designers this summer. Registration is limited to 20 spots per institute (10 spots are open for the junior video game designer institute).

About

Session Dates: July 6, 2020 - July 10, 2020

In this camp, junior designers entering grades one to three (ages 5-8) will learn elementary principles of game making, digital design, systems thinking, creativity, collaboration, digital media literacy, and other STEAM skills through Gamestar Mechanic Jr. The programming will be suitable for children learning to read and write, and none of the games included in Gamestar Mechanic Jr. feature violent activities. Junior designers will solve problems and puzzles, find items, and avoid enemies. By the end of the camp, junior designers will have designed and published at least one game of their own creation that has been playtested and shared with their peers. Touch screen tablets (iPads) are available to check out and use for the duration of the institute free of charge.
