SUNY Oneonta’s online M.S.Ed. programs are ranked No. 125 in the nation on U.S. News and World Report's 2026 list of "Best Online Master's in Education Programs."
The ranking recognizes the university’s three fully online M.S.Ed. programs, in Literacy Education, Educational Technology and School Counseling. Two additional programs in Special Education (the M.S.Ed. and the M.S.T) will move to fully online delivery beginning in Fall 2026.
SUNY Oneonta has a strong track record of training teachers at both the undergraduate and graduate levels and was the first college in New York State to offer an online literacy education program.
For the 2026 edition of the Best Online Master's in Education Programs, U.S. News ranked online graduate education programs based on five categories – Engagement, Faculty Credentials and Training, Peer Assessment, Services and Technology, and Student Excellence.
“We are proud to be recognized once again for our innovative curriculum and hands-on experiences that immerse students in pedagogy and prepare them to foster creativity, research skills, collaboration and other competencies,” said Dr. Gabriel Aquino, SUNY Oneonta’s dean of Graduate Studies.
SUNY Oneonta’s online Literacy Education and Educational Technology Specialist MS.Ed. programs offer a flexible, convenient and affordable path toward achieving New York State professional teaching certification. Each program has three start terms with rolling admissions, so students can apply any time and start in spring, summer or fall. Classes are asynchronous, so students can work at their own pace. Both programs can be completed in as little as one year of full-time study. The flexible, online format is ideal for working teachers, who can enroll part-time and apply the skills they learn in their own classrooms.
SUNY Oneonta's online School Counseling M.S.Ed. program leads to initial certification in school counseling, as recognized by the New York State Education Department. This program has one start term (fall) and can be completed in two years on a full-time basis, with a total of 48 credit hours, including 100 hours of practicum and 600 hours of internship.
Education is SUNY Oneonta’s oldest academic program, and one of its largest. The university offers 22 educator preparation programs, including bachelor’s degrees in early childhood, elementary and secondary education. At the graduate level, SUNY Oneonta offers in-person master’s degree programs in special education, online master’s degree programs in literacy education, educational technology and school counseling, and an online certificate program in school counseling.
SUNY Oneonta’s education programs have been continuously accredited since 2000 and recently earned accreditation by the Association for Advancing Quality in Educator Preparation.
