SUNY Oneonta’s Tutor Leadership Program is a stackable credential designed to prepare you to work effectively as a peer tutoring leader and mentor for other tutors. It can also prepare you for work as a graduate school Teaching Assistant.
Competencies
Upon completion of the program, you will be able to demonstrate the following competencies:
- ability to foster “think-aloud” strategies in students;
- ability to provide effective verbal feedback to students;
- ability to explain the relationship of test anxiety to the Illusion of Knowing/Study Skills issues;
- proficiency with teaching simple skills, such as time-management planning, task analysis and study skills planning;
- strong small-group management skills; and
- thorough knowledge of the Tracktion program for both student and tutor use.
You will also gain valuable, transferrable skills for other careers, including how to effectively lead a group, set boundaries, assess and give feedback, and communicate ideas clearly.
This training program leads to certification by the National Tutoring Association (NTA) and includes NTA Level 2 Intermediate Training (6-8 hours) and at least six hours of study skills workshops offered by the Student Learning Center.
