Anthropology Student Opportunities

Whether it’s exploring the ruins of Stonehenge during a faculty-led field course or searching for evidence of ancient hunter-gatherer communities at our summer Archeological Field School, Oneonta students have many opportunities to put their classroom learning into practice.

Get Field Experience

The Pine Lake Archeological Field School, a joint program of SUNY Oneonta and Hartwick College, is offered every other year at Hartwick’s Pine Lake Environmental Campus in West Davenport, about eight miles from Oneonta. During the month-long program, students work eight to 10 hours a day learning basic methods in field archaeology, including survey and excavation techniques, mapping, and flotation and laboratory analysis.

Travel to a Conference

Anthropology students can choose to attend a variety of local, regional and national conferences such as the American Anthropological Association annual meeting. They may accompany faculty members from the department. SUNY Oneonta’s Student Travel for Excellence Program and David D’Antonio Student Travel for Excellence Fund offer grants to help defray expenses for travel to professional meetings and conferences.

Conduct Research

Student grants for independent research with faculty sponsors are available through the university, and more than 100 undergraduate students present their research at SUNY Oneonta’s annual Student Research and Creative Activity Day. Students can earn credit toward graduation by completing a Research Assistantship or Independent Study with a faculty member from the department.

Complete an Internship

The Career Planning and Networking Center offers connections to local and regional internship opportunities. Grants are available for students pursuing unpaid internships on and off campus. Anthropology students have completed internships both on campus (e.g., Milne Library Alden Room, Science Discovery Center, Gender and Sexuality Resource Center) and off campus (e.g., Yager Museum, American Museum of Natural History, New York State Museum).

Financial Support for Hands-On Learning

Students may apply for small grants from the Anthropology Field Experiences Fund to help with the expenses related to participation in a field school, field-based research for an independent study or research assistantship, or an unpaid internship.

Join the Anthropology Club

The Anthropology Club provides a chance to meet, discuss and engage in anthropological activities outside the classroom. The club regularly holds social events, hosts speakers and performs service activities. It’s open to all students, regardless of major.
