Tuesday, Apr. 19 at 5:30 p.m. - Power outage update & student overnight shelter information

NYSEG has indicated that the damage to the lines that serve our main campus' power may not be repaired until sometime overnight or tomorrow. We have been in constant communication with NYSEG and they have indicated that our campus is a priority for restoration, but that the campus should be prepared to spend the night without full power.

College, city, and county emergency management professionals have assessed the situation on campus and determined that it is safe for the students to stay in the residence halls overnight. However, we have also opened up a temporary shelter for SUNY Oneonta students in the Alumni Field House.

All students have the option to stay in your residence hall or off-campus residence. Or, if you prefer, you can shelter in the Alumni Field House for the night. The field house has full power, but you should be prepared to bring bedding, toiletries, and other essential personal belongings. There will be staff from Residential Community Life in the field house all night and University Police will be making their regular rounds throughout the entire campus.

Check your email for a link to sign up to stay in the field house. You can also stop over to the field house and sign up in person any time after 7 p.m.

Any student can also come to the field house to charge devices, use the fitness center, courts, showers, and any other facilities for normal operations until 11 p.m.

The only entrance to the field house that will be open is the second-floor entrance near the parking lot.

Depending on your choice or preference, staff from the Office of Residential Community Life will be in touch with you with further instructions and information about overnight accommodations.

Reminders:

  • Wilsbach will remain open for dining until 11 p.m. and plans to re-open as scheduled at 7:30 am tomorrow.
  • Fitzelle will remain open until 11 p.m. for students to use wifi and the charging station.

We are evaluating our options on whether classes will be held tomorrow and will make an announcement later this evening.

Tuesday, Apr. 19 at 1:30 p.m. - Building Access & Charging Station Updates

Building Access Update: The Milne Library is closed. Fitzelle Hall is open and has wifi access.

In the meantime:

  • Fitzelle Hall and the Milne Library are both open and have wifi access (wifi on 3rd floor of Milne).
  • We are working to set up charging stations on campus and will share more information soon.
  • Students living on campus should check their email for additional information from the Office of Residential Community Life.

If the power is not restored on campus by late this afternoon we will provide additional information and instructions.

For on-campus residential students only:

  • It is expected to snow lightly until this afternoon, but campus and your building are safe. The college is working with our local utility company to get the power restored as soon as possible. In the meantime:
  • Keep windows closed to keep as much heat in the buildings as possible.
  • Use the main door to enter your residence hall. These doors will be staffed or propped so that you may gain access to building. Card access panels may stop working as their backup batteries drain.
  • Wilsbach is the only dining hall open at this point, but is staffed and will serve breakfast, lunch and dinner. Other dining locations may open later if power is restored
  • Fitzelle Hall is open and has wifi access.

RA and RD/ACs will be in your building if you have questions or concerns. Residential Community Life staff will be at front desk/RA Office of every residence hall. We are here to help! If you have an emergency, UPD is always available at 607-436-3550.

Should the power outage become extended we will communicate additional info and further instructions if needed.
