SUNY Oneonta celebrated National Hispanic/Latinx Heritage Month with a series of events highlighting the cultures, traditions and contributions of Hispanic and Latinx communities through music, dance, poetry, storytelling and opportunities for connection.
The festivities kicked off Sept. 18 with the annual Hispanic/Latinx Heritage Month Kickoff Fiesta and Parade of Nations in the Schumacher Quad. The celebration featured food, trivia, dancing and a concert by Alex Torres & His Latin Orchestra, bringing members of the campus community together to celebrate cultural heritage and diversity.
Throughout the month, students, faculty and staff also had opportunities to explore Hispanic and Latinx experiences through educational and cultural programming.
Events included a Culture & Connection celebration Sept. 22, a poetry workshop and keynote address and performance by renowned musician and storyteller Angelíca María on Sept. 28, and a salsa workshop Oct. 7.
Observed nationally each year from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15, Hispanic/Latinx Heritage Month recognizes the history, achievements and contributions of Americans with ancestry from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America. Originally established as a weeklong observance in 1968, it was expanded to a monthlong celebration in 1988.
At SUNY Oneonta, the annual observance provides opportunities to learn from different perspectives, celebrate cultural identities and strengthen connections across the campus community.
The month's programming reflects the university's ongoing commitment to fostering an inclusive environment where students and employees can share their experiences, celebrate their heritage and learn from one another.
In this video, learn what individual students and staff feel about their heritage and it's impact on their campus lives.
