Student Experience Information for First-Year Students

New Students

Dragon Guides

The Office of Student Experience Team oversees student peer educators, called Dragon Guides. These peer mentors serve first-year and transfer students. New students will meet their assigned Dragon Guide at orientation. During the academic year, the Dragon Guides can be found in "The Lounge", a hang out spot for new students in the Hunt Union. They will host programs and socials to assist new students as they learn how to thrive as Red Dragons.

First Year Experience

Our residential First Year Experience (FYE) gives first-year students the opportunity to meet other new students, gain leadership skills, and participate in programs and activities designed especially for them. Dragon Guides will be present in the FYE residence halls hosting programs and socials. View FYE program details

GOALs

The Growth - Opportunity - Academic - Lens (GOALs) framework is our roadmap to providing all new students with fun and informative co-curricular programs. This framework of events aligns with the Red Dragon Seminar outcomes in which students will learn:

  • communication, organizational, and time management skills
  • academic expectations at a collegiate level
  • awareness of social justice and sustainability inequities
  • how to utilize tools and systems specific to SUNY Oneonta
  • plus much more!

All of these events can be found on Campus Connection, the CORQ app, and Instagram.
