PLACES Institute New Programs and Projects

Introducing New Programs and Projects

A Research Program is an umbrella that may contain any number of projects—some may have a single project, while others are multifaceted, such as the COVID in the Catirondacks Program. A SUNY Oneonta faculty member can propose a research program or project provided it falls under the specifications and mission of the PLACES Institute. Institute Directors vote upon proposals and involve research fellows before acceptance. Once the institute sanctions a program, the research expectation of faculty members may increase as part of the program.

Call for Proposals

Deadline: October 15, 2024

The Call is Forthcoming.

The PLACES Institute has a Community Seed Grant program to support faculty engaged in research with a local and regional focus.

The PLACES Institute is accepting applications for funding in two categories:

  1. Faculty-initiated grants: fund for a faculty member for a two-year period at a total of $3250. Faculty will develop these grants and do not require a community partner. Faculty are eligible for faculty-initiated grants once every five years.
  2. Community partner grants: these are externally funded and require a community partner that will contribute to the project with personnel time and a $1000 stipend for a student researcher to work with the faculty on the project. There are no limits for the community partner grants.

Priorities

  • As noted in the missions of the PLACES Institute, we are devoted to supporting the local Oneonta area and the surrounding region. Priority will go to proposals demonstrating the research's local or regional benefit.
  • Prioritized areas of research will align with the mission of the PLACES Institute. They may include population, environment, health, infrastructure, housing, social and cultural enrichment, political engagement, and economic development. Priority will be given to proposals that align with the PLACES mission.

Application Process

Submit a 2–3-page description of the program that includes the following:

  1. Specify: 1) Faculty-Initiated, or 2) Community partner proposal.
