Counseling and Helping Skills Microcredentials

Overview

Our region has a growing need for accessible educational opportunities for those working in human services and helping professions. Local employers, including Departments of Social Services in Otsego and Delaware counties, have partnered to support training that meets workforce demand. Because these careers are in high demand across New York state, these microcredentials offer valuable preparation for students pursuing helping professions across a range of majors.

SUNY Oneonta offers two, stackable Counseling and Helping Skills microcredentials:

Skills

SUNY Oneonta’s Foundational Counseling and Helping Skills microcredential provides you with the following skills:

  • Basic counseling knowledge
  • Understanding of ethical concerns in helping professions
  • Identify roles and goals of human service professionals

Required Courses

  • HDFS - 1200 - Introduction to Human Services
  • HDFS - 3200 - Helping Skills in Human Services

Competencies

Upon completion of the program, students will demonstrate:

  • Basic counseling skills
  • Knowledge of ethical concerns in helping professions
  • The ability to describe the professional roles and goals of various human service careers

Eligibility

This microcredential is eligible to current matriculated undergraduate students and non-degree students.

Skills

SUNY Oneonta’s Intermediate Counseling and Helping Skills microcredential provides you with the following skills:

  • Understanding case management foundations
  • Client assessment skills
  • Treatment planning and coordination
  • Group facilitation skills

Required Courses

  • HDFS - 2560 - Case Management
  • HDFS - 3570 - Group Work in Human Services

Competencies

Upon completion of the program, students will demonstrate:

  • Demonstrate an understanding of the philosophy and principles of case management
  • Assess a client’s strengths and needs via a mental health assessment
  • Develop a treatment plan through all stages of case management
  • Develop the skills for conducting group programs, such as support groups
