Dance Minor

This minor is open to all undergraduates and consists of courses related to the performance and production of dance and theatre. Check prerequisite requirements for coursework. Students planning to complete requirements for this minor should declare their intentions at an early point to facilitate advisement. Forms for this purpose are available from the Theatre Department at 106 Fine Arts Building. Effective Spring 2015


A. Core Requirements 6 s.h.

  • THTR 104 Survey of Dance in America
  • THTR 218 Dance for Musical Theatre or PHED 237 Choreography: Art & Process

B. Dance Genre Requirements 12 s.h.

  • BALLET: 3 s.h.
  • PHED 132 Ballet I or
  • PHED 232 Ballet II*

OTHER DANCE GENRES: 9 s.h.
(Two different genres required; 3 s.h. @ 200-level)

  • DANC 131 Modern Dance I or
  • DANC 231 Modern Dance II* 3 s.h.
  • DANC 133 Ballroom Dance I or 3 s.h.
  • DANC 234 Ballroom Dance II
  • DANC 135 Folk Dance 3 s.h.
  • DANC 136 Tap Dance I or
  • DANC 236 Tap Dance II* 3 s.h.
  • DANC 139 Jazz Dance I 3 s.h.

*Students may audition to skip an entry level Dance Genre course and go directly to the advanced level. See Department Secretary or website for details about the audition schedule and process.

1. College rules pertaining to curriculum majors also apply to curriculum minors

  • Minor GPA of at least 2.0
  • All courses must be taken for a letter grade unless offered Pass/Fail only
  • One-half (1/2) of the minor coursework must be completed in residence
  • No more than two courses may overlap between/among all majors/minors; any excess requires additional coursework

*Students who have extensive Ballet, Modern Dance, Ballroom Dance, or Tap Dance experience may be able to have the prerequisite waived by instructor permission.

3. Theatre Majors- you must take THTR 218 for the Dance Minor Core Theory requirements. If a student completes DANC 237 and then changes to a Theatre Major, DANC 237 will be accepted as meeting the choreography requirement
