Work at the Art Gallery

Every semester, the Art Galleries at SUNY Oneonta employ a few students to work as gallery attendants. The role includes monitoring the gallery spaces and artwork on view, keeping track of the number of gallery visitors, answering questions about the current exhibitions and space and on occasion assisting with gallery tours and programs.

Internships

SUNY Oneonta’s Art Department offers internships that let you earn college credit while gaining hands-on experience in professional settings. Qualified juniors and seniors can work with galleries, schools, businesses or other arts organizations, developing practical skills and building connections that can help launch your career after graduation.

Art and Scope

Art & Scope is SUNY Oneonta’s student-run literary and arts magazine, showcasing original work from students of all majors. Each semester, participants design, assemble and publish the magazine while supporting campus cultural arts through events and collaborations. It’s a hands-on opportunity to create, lead and share your voice. Learn more about Art & Scope.

Artist-in-Residence

SUNY Oneonta’s Artist-in-Residence program offers students unique opportunities to collaborate directly with professional artists across disciplines. These residencies foster hands-on learning, allowing students to engage in the creative process alongside established artists.

For instance, during the Spring 2025 residency, interdisciplinary artists Georgia b. Smith and Zelda Smith worked closely with students, faculty and staff to explore the intersection of art, technology and narrative. Their collaborative project culminated in the performance art piece “The Uncanny Body,” staged in the Hamblin Theatre. Students from art, dance, theatre, and music disciplines participated in this project, gaining firsthand experience in performance art and interdisciplinary collaboration.

Similarly, in Spring 2024, artist Natan Diacon-Furtado engaged three student interns in creating multimedia installations projected on campus buildings. This collaborative effort provided students with practical experience in large-scale art installations and multimedia design.

These residencies not only enhance students' artistic skills but also prepare them for professional careers by providing real-world experience and fostering connections within the art community.
