Whether it’s filming a new student talk show in the studio or completing a summer internship with a major media network, Oneonta students have many opportunities to put their classroom knowledge into practice.
Complete an Internship
Internships are not required but strongly encouraged, and most students complete one during their third or fourth year. The Career Planning and Networking Center offers connections to many local and regional internship opportunities.
You can gain valuable experience across New York State and beyond—from newsrooms and PR firms to nonprofits and marketing agencies. Our students have completed internships with the following organizations:

Institute for Local News
Our involvement with SUNY’s Institute for Local News lets students build a portfolio while supporting and strengthening local journalism. With our OnNY Community Media Lab as your home base, you’ll learn to report, edit and produce stories just like a working journalist, and have your work published by professional media outlets.

Student Organizations and Clubs
WireTV
WireTV, our student-run television network, lets students strengthen video, audio and television production skills by utilizing professional equipment and video-editing software. Students have the creative ability to come up with and execute their own television show ideas.
The State Times
The State Times is our student-run newspaper and offers students the opportunity to flex journalism skills such as reporting, writing and photographing for hard news, event publicity and opinion pieces.
WONY
In operation since 1962, WONY 90.9 FM is SUNY Oneonta’s student-run radio station, providing entertainment, education and news to its listening audience and offering hands-on experience in radio broadcasting and radio management. Jump on the air and host your very own show!
Lambda Pi Eta
Lambda Pi Eta is the official communication studies honor society of the National Communication Association (NCA), with more than 400 active chapters at four-year colleges and universities worldwide. LPH represents what Aristotle described as the three ingredients of persuasion: Logos (Lambda) meaning logic, Pathos (Pi) relating to emotion, and Ethos (Eta) defined as character credibility and ethics. The honor society regularly meets and holds events and activities.
