Student Opportunities

Kente Celebration

Kente celebrates diversity, equity and inclusion via academics, leadership and service. Every spring, faculty and staff from the Department of Africana and Latinx Studies collaborate with the Office of Equity and Inclusion to create an inclusive celebration that reflects the university's diverse student population. Selected ALS students serve on the advisory committee to plan the ceremony.

Africana and Latinx Studies Club

The Africana and Latinx Studies Club offers students meaningful opportunities to engage with the cultures, histories and intellectual traditions explored in Africana and Latinx Studies courses. Through events, discussions and community service, students connect classroom learning to real-world issues while building relationships across campus and with local organizations that support social justice and civic engagement.

Pan-African Student Union

The Pan-African Student Union is a cultural organization that unites people of African birth and descent along with people who wish to learn about the culture. Their mission is to provide knowledge, empowerment and to raise awareness about the African community.

Praxis

Praxis: Journal of Gender and Cultural Studies is a peer-reviewed journal edited by a tenured ALS faculty member. In addition to the opportunity to intern with the journal, students taking Africana and Latinx Studies senior seminars will be encouraged to submit their semester papers to Praxis for possible publication.

Internships

The Africana and Latinx Department assists students who are interested in obtaining internships. Both majors and minors have the opportunity to intern in a variety of career settings.

Open House

Our department hosts two promotional open houses, one in the fall semester and one in the spring. Our majors and minors play an important role communicating their experiences within the department and how the major is preparing them for life after Oneonta.
