Curriculum

The curriculum in each of our teacher education programs has three dimensions: general education, content education and professional education.

General Education consists of courses you’ll select from the traditional academic disciplines such as the arts, biology, history, mathematics and English. This dimension of the curriculum is meant to provide the broadly-based liberal arts educational foundation needed by every educational professional.

Content Education centers on the academic discipline(s) you’ve chosen as your area of teaching expertise. Prospective secondary school teachers may select from 10 teaching areas.

Professional Education consists of a sequence of courses that will help you develop the knowledge, comprehension and application of skills and strategies needed to become an effective teacher. This sequence provides a variety of experiences including service learning and early field experience opportunities.

NYS Education Certification

This program satisfies the educational requirements required for certification in New York State only. Individuals interested in this program who do not reside in NY State but are planning to seek employment in NY State may still be eligible for admission to this program.

Hands-On Learning

In addition to formal field experience in area schools, pre-service teachers have many opportunities to practice their teaching strategies, including service-learning activities and leading workshops for area middle school students during the Catskill Area School Study Council’s fall enrichment seminar series. A capstone student teaching experience in both a middle school and high school setting prepares graduates to teach successfully in grades 7–12.

Substitute Teaching

Through partnerships with with the Otsego Northern Catskills Board of Cooperative Educational Services (ONC BOCES) and Delaware-Chenango-Madison-Otsego Board of Cooperative Educational Services (DCMO BOCES), Elementary Education students have the opportunity to substitute teach in the area school districts during the school year. This is a great way to get field experience with children at various ages and grade levels and get paid by the school district. Participating students will need to have their own transportation, or commute with classmates who are also ‘subbing’ in the same school district.
