Earth and Atmospheric Sciences Facilities

You’ll learn in specialized facilities, including a skylab observation room, rooftop weather station, SEM with 60,000x magnification and an Emriver stream table for studying erosion and sediment transport. Labs feature modern equipment and a 24-computer classroom where students use tools like ArcGIS Pro, Google Earth and Python. We offer students the opportunity to gain hands-on experience on instruments and equipment right from the start.

View from inside the skylab sky observation room.

Skylab

Our unique sky observation room provides the opportunity for meteorology majors to strengthen their weather observations skills.

Students post with the rooftop weather station.

Weather Station

Meteorology majors collect data from the rooftop weather station to become proficient in instrumentation and forecasting.

Student works at the Scanning Electron Microscope terminal.

Scanning Electron Microscope

Our department houses a Hitachi TM 3030 scanning electron microscope (SEM) with EDX Analysis and magnification up to 60,000x.

Emriver stream table that provides hands-on experience about river formation.

Stream Table

There is an Emriver stream table where students can learn through hands-on experience about river formation, erosion, landscape stability, sediment transport, and more.

Students work in the Earth and Atmospheric Sciences hydrogeology lab.

Lab Equipment

Our department has lab equipment to provide hands-on experience. This example shows students working on a hydrogeology lab.

Computer Lab

There is a classroom with 24 computers. Many faculty use this room to instruct students on programs like Google Earth, ArcGIS Pro, and Python.
