Sport and Exercise Sciences Student Opportunities

Through coursework and volunteer opportunities with area organizations, our Sport and Exercise Sciences Department helps students engage with the Oneonta community and develop lasting connections that strengthen both their professional network and their career readiness.

Internships

Internships give students the chance to apply what they’ve learned in the classroom to real-world settings. Whether placed in clinics, fitness centers or sport organizations, students are encouraged to take an active role in the work they do. These hands-on experiences allow them to contribute ideas, assist with projects, and work directly with professionals and clients. Local partners often invite students to be fully immersed in the process, providing valuable insight into career pathways and building confidence in their professional skills.

Community Partnerships

Through partnerships with local organizations, students gain meaningful experience while making a positive impact in the Oneonta community. Working with schools, childcare centers and recreation programs, students observe and engage with children in both classroom and play settings. Whether assisting in the gym, supporting structured activities or demonstrating movement skills, they apply classroom knowledge to real-world situations. These partnerships not only strengthen professional skills but also foster connections that benefit both students and the community they serve.

Hands-On Coursework

Coursework in the Sport and Exercise Sciences Department goes beyond the classroom, giving students the chance to apply concepts through active, real-world learning. Classes often incorporate interactive projects that explore human growth, motor development and performance across the lifespan. Students engage directly with participants of different ages, observe developmental stages and design activities that promote movement and wellness. These experiences help students connect theory to practice while gaining confidence in their ability to teach, lead and support others.

Research Opportunities

Students in the Sport and Exercise Sciences Department have the chance to engage in meaningful research that addresses real issues within health, fitness and sport. Supported by programs like the Student Research and Creative Activity (SRCA) grant, students collaborate with faculty to design studies, collect data and put findings into action. Recent projects have focused on promoting body positivity and addressing disordered eating through peer-led workshops, showing measurable impacts on student health and well-being. These opportunities allow students to contribute to evidence-based solutions while gaining valuable skills in critical thinking, data analysis and professional communication.

Travel to a Conference

Students in the Sport and Exercise Sciences Department have opportunities to share their work at professional conferences alongside faculty mentors. Presenting research to industry leaders, administrators and peers allows students to showcase their knowledge while gaining valuable feedback and networking experience. Supported by resources such as the Caroline ’67 and D’Antonio Student Travel for Excellence Fund, which helps cover travel expenses, students can participate in national conversations on sport, health and leadership. These experiences prepare them to enter their fields with confidence and a strong professional presence.

Student Organizations

Beyond the classroom, students can get involved in organizations that connect their academic interests with leadership and service. Student clubs in sport and exercise sciences provide opportunities to collaborate with peers, plan events and engage with the campus and local community. These groups foster teamwork, communication, and leadership skills while giving students a chance to build lasting friendships and explore professional interests in a supportive environment.
