Non-Degree Study

If you're interested in taking one or more classes but not enrolling in a degree program, you may be eligible to take classes as a non-degree student.

How to Apply

The application deadline for all non-degree applications is one week prior to the term for which you are applying to. There are no exceptions.

For steps to apply as a non-degree undergraduate or graduate student, please select one of the following:

  1. Review Non-Degree Student Polices below
  2. Complete the online non-degree application
  3. Submit an official high school transcript
  4. Submit letters of recommendation from your guidance counselor and principal

    1. official HSED or GED score report/completion certificate;
    2. official high school transcript including graduation date or showing award of diploma; and
    3. official transcripts from all post-secondary institutions attended.*

*Note: You must have a 2.0 cumulative GPA from the most recent college you attended. If you have never attended college, we will review your high school transcripts to determine if you are eligible.

    *official transcripts are only necessary if you are taking a spring or fall course OR a summer or winter course that has a pre-requisite requirement.

Non-Degree Student Policies

Maximum Credit Hours

  • Undergraduate non-degree students may register for up to 12 semester hours per semester and six semester hours each summer session but cannot earn more than 24 semester hours total at SUNY Oneonta without enrolling in a degree program.
  • Graduate non-degree students may register for up to 12 semester hours and up to six semester hours each summer session.

    *Note that some graduate programs do not allow students to matriculate into degree programs after completing courses as a non-degree student.

Minimum GPA

  • Undergraduate – You must maintain a 2.0 grade point average to be eligible to continue enrollment.
  • Graduate – You must maintain a 3.0 grade point average to be eligible to continue enrollment. 

Non-Degree Student Advisement

If you are taking courses with the goal of eventually enrolling in a degree program at SUNY Oneonta, you should discuss your non-degree course enrollment with The Extended and Community Learning (ExCL) Center staff and your Transfer Admissions Counselor prior to course enrollment. Continuing non-degree, pre-matriculated students are encouraged to meet with ExCL Center staff and/or your Admissions Counselor each semester prior to course enrollment. 

If you are taking coursework as a visiting student to transfer to another institution, you should seek guidance from and confirm course approval with that institution prior to course enrollment as a non-degree student at SUNY Oneonta. 

Transferring Credit

If you’re planning to transfer credit from SUNY Oneonta to another college, you must submit an official transcript request to be sent to your home institution through our Registrar's Office. We strongly encourage students to seek written approval from their home institution prior to enrolling in courses at SUNY Oneonta to ensure that credits will transfer.

Code of Conduct

All non-degree students are bound by the rules, policies and regulations outlined in SUNY Oneonta's Code of Student Conduct.

Prior SUNY Oneonta Student

  • If you have been dismissed from SUNY Oneonta, you are not eligible to take courses as a non-degree student.
  • If you have previously attended SUNY Oneonta as a prior matriculated student and did not earn a degree, you must apply as readmit student through the readmissions process.
