Open Call for Student Exhibitions
Applications for Spring 2025 exhibitions through Project Open Call are now closed. Applicants will be notified of their status by noon, December 9, 2025.
Applications Closed
Are you a current SUNY Oneonta student interested in exhibiting your work on campus? Apply now to our open call for student exhibitions in the Project Space Gallery, on view during the Spring 2025 semester. There are two track options available: the "Curated Group Show" track and the "Artist as Curator" track. In the Curated Group Show Track, you are encouraged to submit work(s) that you feel is a strong example of your practice – either personal work or course work of all mediums is accepted. If you have an exhibition idea, either for a solo show of personal work or a group project, you may submit that under the Artist as Curator Track. Exhibition dates and selected work will be announced in December 2024.
You must apply via SlideRoom, which you can access through the button links. Reach out to the Gallery Director, Sarah Simpson (Sarah.Simpson@Oneonta.edu), with questions.
Interested in applying for a solo show but concerned about the cost? Check out the Student Grant Program for Research and Creative Activity (SRCA), for pathways to help fund your work and its display. We recommend reviewing the "Traditional" Track and reaching out to the Gallery Director with questions.
Spring 2025 Application Dates: September 30 – November 22, 2024
You must be a current SUNY Oneonta undergraduate student at the time of the exhibition (Spring 2025 semester) to be eligible to apply. A faculty sponsor from the Art Department is required for all applications. Incomplete applications will not be considered. Applications are reviewed by the Gallery Advisory Committee. You are not required to frame your work for exhibition, but you are responsible for all cost and labor if you want it to be framed. While a Project Open Call exhibition occurs semesterly, the type of exhibition is not guaranteed.
CURATED GROUP SHOW TRACK
This track is for submissions of singular works or limited series to be considered for inclusion in a curated group exhibition in the Project Space Gallery. The exhibition will be juried by the Gallery Advisory Committee and curated by the Gallery Director. While an Open Call happens every semester, a curated group show is not guaranteed every semester and may be replaced by a solo student show. Incomplete applications will not be considered. Successfully submitting an application is not a guarantee of exhibition.
Students can apply with up to three individual pieces which must be submitted within a single application. Series of works are accepted as an individual piece, but the application must clearly state that it is a series, the final number of works in the series and each works' dimensions. The series must also show cohesiveness in theme or content to be accepted as a series. The submitted works do not have to be complete at the time of the submission but must be complete at least one month before the exhibition opens. Applications with works in progress must show an image of the current state of the work and a description of what the final work will look like.
Your submission must include:
- Your name (with your preferred spelling), preferred pronouns, email, and current class rank.
- A clear JPEG photo of your work (or work in progress). An MP4 file for all video work (or work in progress).
- Full caption information of your work, including: title, date (year), medium, and dimensions (H x W x L in inches for physically displayed work; minute:second for video work; preferred dimensions and dpi for digitally displayed work).
- Your current artist statement (maximum 250 words) and artist CV (Curriculum Vitae). If you need advice on writing either of these documents or assistance, reach out to the Gallery Director (Sarah.Simpson@Oneonta.edu) at least two weeks before the final deadline.
- A description of the final state of works in progress, or clarification on the extent of a series of works, if applicable.
- The email and approval of your selected faculty sponsor.
ARTIST AS CURATOR TRACK
This track is for submissions of solo show or thematic group show ideas to be curated by the proposing student(s) and installed in the Project Space Gallery. The submitted exhibitions will be reviewed by the Gallery Advisory Committee and Gallery Director. While an Open Call happens every semester, an "artist as curator" show is not guaranteed every semester and may be replaced by a group show juried by the Gallery Advisory Committee and curated by the Gallery Director. Incomplete applications will not be considered. Successfully submitting an application is not a guarantee of exhibition.
Proposals may be submitted by an individual student or a group of students. Individual students may only submit one proposal per open call. You may submit proposals both as an individual and as part of a group during one open call period. All proposed works do not have to be complete at the time of submission but must be complete at least one month before the exhibition opens.
Your submission must include:
- Your name(s) (with your preferred spelling), preferred pronouns, email(s), and current class rank(s). Where applicable, include this information for all group members.
- The title of your exhibition and a brief explanation of your proposal (maximum 500 words). This should include the names of all participating artists (for group shows), total number of included works, a description of the final state of works in progress (if applicable), layout and installation expectations including any unique installation needs (outlet access, monitors, etc.), and any relevant notes on content.
- A sketch or mock-up of your proposed layout as a JPEG or PDF. This can be a picture of a physical sketch or a digital rendering. Click on the link to download a copy of the Project Space Gallery floor plan.
- Up to three clear JPEG photos of your work (or work in progress). An MP4 file for all video work (or work in progress).
- Full caption information of all the proposed works, including: title, date (year), medium, and dimensions (H x W x L in inches for physically displayed work; minute:second for video work; preferred dimensions in inches and dpi for digitally displayed work).
- Your current artist statement (maximum 250 words) and artist CV (Curriculum Vitae). Your artist statement explains your body of work as a whole: what inspires you, what do you focus on thematically (if anything), what medium(s) do you focus on, and how do you want viewers to understand your practice. If you need advice on writing either of these documents or assistance, reach out to the Gallery Director (Sarah.Simpson@Oneonta.edu) at least two weeks before the final deadline.
- A curatorial statement (maximum 250 words) of the exhibition that explains how the exhibited works relate to each other, identifies a cohesive theme if it exists, and explains how you want the audience to view / understand the work included in the show. Do not copy/paste what you wrote in the explanation of your proposal.
- If you would like to share any additional images or information, please paste a OneDrive link into the "additional comments" box in the application. Please make sure that the link is set to allow anyone with access to the link to view it.
- The email and approval of your selected faculty sponsor.
Applicants must submit their work digitally via the link above. Reach out to Sarah Simpson, Gallery Director, Sarah.Simpson@Oneonta.edu with any questions.
