Policy Statement

A maximum of one half of the credits required for a degree or certificate may be transferred with the program faculty’s approval. To be considered for transfer, a course must:

  • Be completed at a regionally accredited institution of higher education, an institution accredited by the New York State Board of Regents, or through an approved external program.
  • Have been completed with a grade of B (3.0) or better. In the event a course is graded on a pass/fail basis, the P grade may be accepted at the discretion of the graduate program.
  • Have been completed within seven years of acceptance to the program to which it will be applied.
  • Be similar in quality, scope, and nature to corresponding courses at SUNY Oneonta.
  • Form a logical, relevant, and coherent part of the student’s total graduate program.
  • Be needed to meet degree requirements.

Rationale

Transfer credits allow students to apply coursework completed at one institution toward their degree requirements at another institution. Transfer credits offer students greater flexibility, cost savings, and access to a broader range of educational opportunities. They can potentially reduce the time it takes to complete a degree, enabling students to graduate sooner and enter the workforce or pursue further education. For students who need to relocate or change institutions for personal or professional reasons, transfer credits provide a way to maintain continuity in their education.

Applicability of the Policy

This policy applies to graduate students at SUNY Oneonta.

  • The registrar’s office will add the course information and SUNY Oneonta equivalent to the credit equivalency database.
  • It is the responsibility of the matriculated student to have an official transcript forwarded to the registrar’s office following completion of the course.
  • The registrar’s office enters the transfer credit on the student’s transcript.
  • Transfer courses are not part of the SUNY Oneonta GPA calculation and do not affect the SUNY Oneonta GPA.
