Do you have a bachelor's degree outside of education but want to earn your teacher certification in special education?
SUNY Oneonta's Master of Science in Teaching (M.S.T.) program provides an opportunity for individuals with bachelor's degrees outside of education to earn teacher certification in special education. Our program leads to initial certification in Early Childhood or Childhood Special Education -- graduates of this program are eligible for professional certification in Early Childhood or Childhood Special Education after the completion of three years of teaching special education.
Degree Requirements
Admissions Criteria
- Submit a completed application and the non-refundable fee.
- Submit an official transcript of an earned Bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited college.
- Content core in a major, concentration, or the equivalent with a minimum of 30 credit hours in a single school subject: Science, Math, History, or English.
- Have coursework in technology, artistic expression, communication, information retrieval, humanities, written analysis and expression, a language other than English, concepts in history and the social sciences, scientific and mathematical processes.
- Have achieved a GPA of 3.0 overall.
- Submit an essay outlining your purpose in applying for the M.S.T. in Special Education, why are you drawn to Special Education, and what are your career goals.
- Submit three letters of reference.
- Complete a clinical interview.

Are you a certified teacher interested in earning a professional license?
SUNY Oneonta's Master of Science in Education (M.S. Ed.) program provides certified teachers with greater understanding of the needs of students with disabilities and handicapping conditions and to master techniques to provide the most effective education program for them. Our program will lead to the professional license for teachers already certified in Early Childhood, Childhood or Adolescence Education, along with an initial license in Special Education.

- Submit a copy of a NYS initial teaching certificate in Early Childhood Education, or notify us that the certification is on your TEACH account. (Teaching certificates from other states are considered.)
- Submit an official transcript of an earned Bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited college.
- Have achieved an undergraduate GPA of 3.0 overall and 3.0 in the major field during the last two years of undergraduate work.
- Submit an essay reflecting on your student teaching and/or teaching experiences with students with special needs and identify one area of special needs that you would like to learn more about. Describe some of the issues you would discuss with a parent/guardian. Also describe two teaching adaptations that you might make for a child with special needs. Include references to at least five professional articles or books.
- Submit three letters of reference.

- Have achieved an undergraduate GPA of 3.0 overall and 3.0 in the major field during the last two years of undergraduate work.

- Prerequisite coursework: two courses in English, two courses in Math, two courses in Social Studies, and two courses in Science at the college level.
- Students with a degree in a non-typical adolescence education program (e.g., Music, Physical Education) must also take and pass the CST Multi-Subject test for admission to the program.
Springbrook Partnership
Through this partnership, teaching assistants working in Springbrook’s new school for children with autism have the opportunity to earn a master’s degree in special education at SUNY Oneonta, tuition-free. Many of the classes are taught on-site by faculty from the university’s nationally accredited Division of Education and Springbrook will pay for employee tuition each semester.

Assistantships
SUNY Oneonta offers Graduate and Teaching Assistantships to a number of full-time graduate students who are enrolled in degree programs. Assistantships are awarded by academic departments. Assistantships may involve tuition waivers and/or stipends.
