Overview

The Philosophy Department plays a vital role in the SUNY Oneonta community. A diverse and distinguished faculty teach a wide range of courses, providing a solid foundation in both Eastern and Western philosophy. We offer a bachelor’s degree with two concentrations: Liberal Arts and Applied Philosophy, and a flexible, liberal arts minor. The major combines well with other fields to form a powerful dual major.

Prepare for Law School

A number of Philosophy majors are involved in our pre-law advisement program. The major is a great choice for those planning to apply to law school because it focuses on the history of ideas, cultivates moral sensitivity, and encourages development of critical reasoning, expression and analysis. In fact, Philosophy majors typically earn some of the highest scores in the nation on the Law School Admissions Test (LSAT).
