Programs and Projects

Programs are collections of research projects addressing a particular theme, such as public health or the environment. Projects are individual research studies that contribute to a research program. Unique Populations

An examination of the nine-county region's demographics and economics. This was an inaugural PLACES program.

People on the Move

Rural New York communities have struggled with low fertility and population decline. This program examines demographic patterns, their consequences, and the potential for repopulating the Catirondack region.

Vibrant Community

A set of interrelated projects focused on understanding the economic and cultural vitality of upstate New York cities and towns. This was a founding PLACES program.

COVID Stories

A corollary of the COVID in the Catirondacks program, COVID Stories is an oral history repository of students at SUNY Oneonta and Utica University about their memories of fall 2020. Histories were collected by students during the fall 2021 semester. This is a CIRC program.

COVID in the Catirondacks

A series of interrelated surveys examining the behavioral epidemiology, mental health impacts, and social consequences of the COVID pandemic in upstate New York, centered on the primary research region. This is a CIRC program.
