SUNY Oneonta has launched two new undergraduate majors and three new online graduate programs, plus a new online degree-completion program in psychology.
“We’re excited to offer these new degree options, which are the result of many months of planning by our faculty. Our two new bachelor’s degree programs offer additional, career-aligned opportunities to first-year and transfer students seeking the traditional on-campus college experience. Our newest master’s degree options will help SUNY Oneonta meet the needs of working adults and others seeking the flexibility and convenience of online programs.”
New Majors
The Bachelor’s of Science in Finance gives students a strong foundation in financial theory, business management and industry-focused analytical tools. The program emphasizes corporate finance, investment and financial markets analysis, risk management, and financial modeling and analytics, as well as the application of these disciplines in global business settings.
The Bachelor’s of Science in Educational Psychology explores how people learn and retain knowledge in formal and informal educational settings such as classrooms, nature centers, museums and health care. Areas of focus include human growth and development as learners, teaching and motivation techniques, testing and assessment methods, psychometrics, learning environments, impediments to learning, and technology in learning.
Online Psychology Program
SUNY Oneonta’s Online Psychology B.S. offers the same curriculum and experiential learning opportunities as the in-person program. The online option is open to traditional transfer students as well as working adults with some college credit seeking a flexible, convenient degree-completion program that can be pursued full or part time.
New Graduate Programs
The online Master of Arts in Crime, Justice and Community helps students develop the knowledge, practical skills and critical perspectives needed to address crime and promote justice within diverse communities. The curriculum emphasizes a holistic approach to criminal justice, integrating theories of social justice, community dynamics and systemic change.
The online Master of Arts in Human Services is designed for professionals seeking to address complex social issues, support diverse communities, and improve service delivery through evidence-based practices, policy analysis and ethical decision-making. Students will explore program evaluation, organizational leadership, advocacy and community engagement while developing practical skills in research, assessment and intervention strategies. To tailor the program to their interests and career goals, students will select a concentration in either Gerontology or Community Organization and Leadership.
The online Master of Science in Sport Coaching and Leadership will prepare students to develop athletes physically, mentally and emotionally while supporting their individual growth. Students graduating from the program will be prepared for careers as coaches or athletic directors at all levels, from K-12 to elite sport settings. Through experiential learning and professional networking opportunities, students will engage with peers and professionals in the field, while completing coursework online. Students in the program may tailor their coursework to simultaneously earn a microcredential in Athletic Administration.
Addressing the Needs of Today’s Learners
In addition to the three new online programs, SUNY Oneonta’s Master of Science in Education (MS.Ed.) programs in School Counseling and Special Education have moved to an online delivery mode similar to the university’s other MS.Ed programs in Literacy Education and Educational Technology, Master of Science in Teaching (M.S.T) programs in Special Education and a Certificate of Advanced Study in School Counseling. Offering all seven education programs online will provide more flexibility for working teachers, who often enroll part time and complete courses in the evening and on weekends around their teaching and family responsibilities, Morales-Diaz said.
In 2022, as part of his Regaining Momentum strategic planning agenda, university President Alberto Cardelle charged the university with increasing graduate program enrollment by 300 students by 2027, through a combination of new program development, moving in-person programs online wherever possible, and expanding marketing efforts to maximize enrollment in existing programs. Since then, the number of full- and part-time graduate students has increased from 571 in the 2022-2023 academic year to 718 in the 2025-2026 academic year.
Accelerated Option for Current Students
The new master’s programs in Crime, Justice and Community, Human Services, Sport Coaching and Leadership and all will have an accelerated option for SUNY Oneonta undergraduate students in related bachelor’s degree programs, allowing them to begin graduate-level courses during their senior year and finish their master’s in a shorter time frame and at a lower cost.
