A colorful array of artwork by 45 students is featured in SUNY Oneonta's 2022 Juried Student Art Show. Featuring more than 80 works by talented student artists, the exhibition opened March 28 and runs through May 21 in the college's Martin-Mullen Art Gallery on campus.

Featured artwork was submitted by students and selected by art department faculty members. This year’s award winners were chosen by invited juror Nancy Callahan, professor emeritus in the art department and a professional artist who exhibits her work nationally and internationally.

The show highlights the different mediums and themes explored by students over the course of the academic year. Prints, 3D models, clay sculptures, digital designs, photographs, drawings and an assortment of mixed media make up this year's offerings. The show poster was designed by student Tara Tassio.

An opening reception March 31 celebrated student talent with an award ceremony and refreshments. During the reception, Gallery Director Sarah Simpson thanked College President Dr. Alberto Cardelle, Provost Dr. Richard Lee, and Dean of the School of Liberal Arts and Business Dr. Elizabeth Dunn for their continued support of the galleries.

“In addition, we would like to thank the faculty who have supported these students through an incredibly difficult two years and beyond, the staff for their crucial help, and of course our students for continuing to show up and work hard despite these extraordinary circumstances,” Simpson said.

The Martin-Mullen Art Gallery and Martin-Mullen Creativity Awards are named after two previous faculty members, Minnie Martin and James Mullen. Gallery hours are Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Professor George Zimmerman taught at SUNY Oneonta for 32 years and was instrumental in developing the art department. He and his wife visited the gallery regularly and were strong supporters of students and programs. Since their passing, their family has generously given donations in their memory for The Helen and George Zimmerman Memorial Awards. We are grateful to their sons, Joseph and David Zimmerman, for their continued support.

Faculty Emerita Jean Parish enjoyed a lengthy teaching career at SUNY Oneonta, and her love of working with students inspired her to leave behind a gift to provide financial assistance to students studying art. One of the two endowed funds she set in place supports the Jean Parish Art on Campus Awards, which facilitate the purchase of student work to be displayed on SUNY Oneonta’s campus.
