Re-evaluation of Transfer Credit

SUNY Oneonta reviews all transfer credit per policies outlined in the Undergraduate Catalog. If a student believes a course was not granted the appropriate equivalency, the student may appeal to have the course reviewed again. There are different routes for an appeal depending on where the course was taken and what is being requested.

Missing General Education (GE) Attribute for a SUNY Course

A course that carries a GE attribute at one SUNY carries the same GE attribute at Oneonta. If a transferred SUNY course is missing an attribute, the student should contact:

  • Office of Admissions if the review is occurring before the student has started classes at SUNY Oneonta
  • Academic Advisement if the review is occurring after the student has started classes at SUNY Oneonta

No forms are required as these courses should count automatically. The appropriate office will update the student’s record accordingly.

Major/Minor Requirement Reviews and Non-SUNY GE Reviews

If a student wishes to request a course to be re-evaluated by SUNY Oneonta, the student can complete a re-evaluation request. Requests may be submitted for re-evaluations that fall into the following scenarios:

  • Request to add a GE Attribute to a Non-SUNY Course
  • Request to re-evaluate major/minor requirements for a SUNY Course
  • Request to re-evaluate major/minor requirements for a Non-SUNY Course

Submitting a Formal Request for Re-Evaluation

If a student does not agree with Oneonta’s decision regarding the granting or placement of credit, they may request re-evaluation.

Denied Requests

If the request is denied and the student does not agree with the campus’ decision, they may appeal to the:

  • Registrar’s Office. Submit a completed Transfer Credit Appeal Form.
  • SUNY System Provost (SUNY course re-evaluations only). Students can submit the SUNY student appeal form along with the requested material to TransferCredit@sysadm.suny.edu or send via certified mail to: Office of the Provost SUNY System Administration One University Plaza Albany, NY 12246 The SUNY Provost will respond to appeals within five business days from receipt of the completed appeal application. If the decision finds merit to change the course to meet a major requirement, the receiving institution will be notified to take appropriate action.
