SUNY Oneonta Athletics

The mission of the Department of Athletics is to develop exemplary scholar-athletes: individuals who strive for competitive excellence, academic achievement, and a commitment to community and service. Intercollegiate athletics is sponsored as an educationally purposeful activity which embraces and instills positive ideals. The principles of excellence, integrity, good sportsmanship, and competition guide student-athletes and department members in their efforts to represent themselves, the athletic department and the university at all times.

-Department of Athletics Mission Statement

At SUNY Oneonta, the athletics program is comprised of 21 varsity sports consisting of approximately 450 student-athletes. Each student-athlete devotes anywhere from two to five hours a day during the season to practice and competition. The cumulative GPA of athletes is consistently higher than the GPA of the overall student body, with many teams achieving over a 3.0 cumulative team GPA.

Annually, the athletic teams combined to donate over 5,000 hours of community service through projects such as the Annual Leaf Raking event, Kids in Sports Day, Into the Streets, the Migrant Workers Angel Giving Tree, the Family Services Association Thanksgiving Day project, and many more. Athletes are also required to attend annual educational programs sponsored by SUNY Oneonta’s SAA (Student Athlete Affairs program), developed under the guidance of the NCAA. Program topics include but are not limited to education on alcohol, drugs, nutrition, diversity, career development, and academic excellence.

Greek Life at Oneonta

Students in Greek letter organizations include some of the best and brightest leaders attending SUNY Oneonta. The average GPA for male fraternity members is higher than the GPA for all-university males. Many Greek members are active in Order of Omega, a national Greek honor society. Each group is required to complete a minimum of one community service activity per semester, but most organizations complete far more. In the 2010-2011 academic year our fraternities and sororities completed over 30,000 combined hours of community service.

There are underground groups who damage the reputation of the recognized groups. Unfortunately, many Greek members do not wear their letters for fear they will be pre-judged do to the behavior of the underground groups. The recognized Greeks have many criteria they must complete each semester, including community service and attendance at educational programming, in order to maintain their recognition status.
