Mission: The Faculty Center provides support for faculty to develop as professionals on campus through effective and inclusive practices.

Vision Statement: The Faculty Center will foster an engaged community of professionals dedicated to cultivating teaching excellence and excellence in service and scholarship. The Center guides faculty to be their best professional selves by supporting a culture of collaboration between colleagues and offices within the institution as a space for intellectual community building. The Faculty Center will evolve to meet the demands of a changing educational landscape.

Goal 1: Cultivate Teaching Excellence

Objective 1: Develop and promote professional development opportunities for faculty

  • Action 1: promote best practices in current research, pedagogy and high impact practices
  • Action 2: provide opportunities for observation of courses and materials with feedback
  • Action 3: host learning opportunities such as Professional Learning Communities, workshops, annual Institute, learning lunches, and events in collaboration with other offices on campus
  • Action 4: establish badging sequence in partnership with TLTC and align events with and in reflection of the needs connected to the badging sequence to recognize faculty service and growth; develop a digital pathway to document sequence and individual growth
  • Action 5: provide support for faculty experiencing challenges in their teaching via individualized consultation and action plans
  • Action 6: provide opportunities for faculty to gather and share publically their success in service and scholarship
  • Action 7: provide structured time for faculty to gather to write and commit to scholarship development

Goal 2: Develop Leadership

Objective 1: Support current leaders

  • Action 1: continue to develop new chair orientation
  • Action 2: maintain the chair guidebook and update annually
  • Action 3: provide chair workshops throughout the fall semester
  • Action 4: develop a chair mentoring program in partnership with the Council of Chairs

Objective 2: Future leader development

  • Action 1: facilitate mid-career mentoring
  • Action 2: provide information sessions on the different pathways for leadership on campus
  • Action 3: host leadership growth sessions (at least one a year/retreat)

Goal 3: Foster Professional Growth

Objective 1: Provide support for faculty across the career arc

  • Action 1: facilitate annual contract renewal, promotion, and tenure workshops
  • Action 2: support programming to accompany the implementation of new procedures and policy for contract renewal and promotion and tenure when instituted
  • Action 3: develop and maintain midcareer mentoring program
  • Action 4: provide support for faculty across the career arc through center programming and one on one consultation
  • Action 5: establish a repository of successful renewal, promotion, and tenure dossiers across disciplines to use as guides for faculty
  • Action 6: establish a volunteer group of qualified faculty to serve as mentors for dossiers and help with digital submission (school-based), help departments recognize this as service
  • Action 7: organize classroom observation pool of campus volunteers from each school that participate in training on writing letters of observation for both in-person and online instruction, help departments recognize this as service and offer as a resource for finding out of department reviewers
  • Action 8: establish and coordinate badging sequence with other offices on campus and clarify the benefits for career growth for faculty

Objective 2: Support new faculty joining SUNY Oneonta

  • Action 1: continue to develop and host a new faculty orientation at the start of each fall semester
  • Action 2: coordinate and manage the mentoring program for new faculty
  • Action 3: organize new faculty workshops and programming to support the first year
  • Action 4: provide new faculty with information and resources to be maintained through the website
  • Action 5: facilitate opportunities for new faculty on campus to meet others and learn about opportunities

Objective 3: Support professional well-being

  • Action 1: provide opportunities for discussion on work-life balance
  • Action 2: assist faculty in developing a sense of community with meaningful connections across campus through center programming

Objective 4: Support collaboration between faculty across campus

  • Action 1: encourage and facilitate interdisciplinary approaches through Center workshops and funding opportunities
  • Action 2: support network development through center convenings and a social approach
  • Action 3: support network development through support of teamed funding submissions when available

Goal 4: Center Assessment

Objective1: Evaluate the evolving needs of the center for future sustainability

  • Action 1: hold final Faculty Center Advisory Council meeting at the close of every academic year and draft successes from the year and goals for following year
  • Action 2: submit an annual report to the Provost with a reflection of the current programming and recommendations for future needs based on shifting and evolving educational landscape
  • Action 3: further develop the Faculty Center Advisory Council by establishing guidelines for member rotating terms, appointments, and formalize expectations and responsibilities
