The Academic Advisement Center works closely with the Office of New Student Services to help you understand your degree requirements and course registration for your first semester at Oneonta. As part of the Orientation process, you will be asked to fill out an Online Advisement Form, which we'll use to create a pre-set class schedule for your first semester.
What is a pre-set schedule?
At most schools, new students are the last to register for classes, thus, making the entry to college a potentially frustrating process. Before our new students arrive, we create customized, pre-set schedules for each new student. Each pre-set has been designed by a department chairperson with a particular major or program in mind.
Freshman course schedules
For incoming freshman students, the pre-sets contain General Education (basic distribution) classes and one course in your major (often this course is a General Education course as well). If you change your major after your freshman year, the courses from the pre-set will still count toward graduation. If you are unsure about your choice of major, your pre-set schedule will contain three or four General Education courses.
Transfer course schedules
If you're a transfer student, your schedule will include more coursework in your major so that you can be on track to complete it in a timely manner. In addition, we use the information you provide us on your Online Academic Advisement Form to create a pre-set just for you.
Finalizing your schedule
You will receive your pre-set schedule before Orientation and have an opportunity to work with a faculty advisor to make changes to or finalize your schedule. The pre-set schedule guarantees that whether you are a first-semester freshman or an incoming transfer student, you will begin with the courses that you need, providing the best opportunity to start your Oneonta career on track to timely degree completion.
Advisement by faculty in your major
Before you attend in the fall or spring, you may work with a faculty advisor to complete your schedule. This faculty member is typically from your major area and will give advisement about classes that enhance your schedule. After you complete registration, you will receive your permanent advisor's name and phone number. This advisor will be a valuable resource for you as you plan your academic path. Our advisors provide their advisees with information about the major, advice on planning your schedule to meet degree requirements, and leads on internship and career opportunities.
What if I haven't chosen a major?
If you are undecided about your major, you will be assigned to a faculty member from an area in which you have an interest. We encourage you to see your advisor several times a semester to plan, talk and learn about opportunities to make the most out of your Oneonta education.
