Summer interns at the SUNY Oneonta Biological Field Station in Cooperstown stumbled upon a surprise recently when they caught a 12-inch American eel more than 440 miles from the ocean in a habitat from which the species was thought to have been extirpated.

SUNY Oneonta students are making a difference in Puerto Rico this summer, assisting in recovery efforts after Hurricane Maria destroyed much of the U.S. territory’s lush landscape and many homes.

A group of 11 students recently returned from a service-learning trip there with geography faculty members Justin Hartnett and Trevor Fuller. Three other students – Ivette Mendoza, Julia Beattie and Jenna Ferraro – are among a select group of SUNY students chosen to participate in the “NY Stands with Puerto Rico Recovery and Rebuilding Initiative” organized by Governor Andrew M. Cuomo.

In her 10 years as SUNY Oneonta's president, Dr. Nancy Kleniewski cheered on thousands of students during Pass Through the Pillars, a beloved tradition for graduating seniors and incoming freshmen. In June, it was her turn to pass through the pillars of Old Main, the college’s first building, signifying her time at Oneonta coming to an end.

SUNY Oneonta Professor of English and English Department Chair Daniel Payne has been appointed to the rank of SUNY Distinguished Teaching Professor. The State University of New York Board of Trustees approved the appointments of 15 faculty to the Distinguished Faculty Rank in April.

SUNY Oneonta’s School of Economics and Business is among 52 business schools worldwide this year to have extended accreditation of their business programs by AACSB International—The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB).

Founded in 1916, AACSB is the longest-serving global accrediting body for business schools, and the largest business education network connecting students, educators and businesses around the world. Fewer than 5 percent of the world’s business schools have achieved AACSB accreditation.
